The Carter Center mourns the loss of Dolly Parton — a legendary artist and dedicated humanitarian whose talent and generosity touched the lives of millions. Her legacy of compassion and service will inspire generations to come. We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and the fans who will always love her.

The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum joins people across America and around the world in mourning the loss of Dolly Parton.

A proud daughter of the South, Dolly brought joy to generations through her music, her unmistakable humor, and a spirit of generosity that extended far beyond the stage. Her commitment to literacy, education, and improving the lives of others reflected a belief shared by President and Mrs. Carter: that our greatest measure is what we do for one another.

President and Mrs. Carter were fortunate to know Dolly and shared with millions an admiration for her extraordinary talent, warmth, and kindness. From evenings celebrating country music together in Washington to their shared commitment to improving the lives of others, theirs was a friendship rooted in a deep love of people and the place they called home.

Today, we remember an American original and a wonderful friend. Dolly, we will always love you!

Our thoughts are with the Parton family and all those who loved her.

“Our people are proud of the American farmers and ranchers. In all the history of our nation, there has been no more dramatic success story than the story of the American farm family. Every person working full-time on a farm now provides the food for about 100 other people, both in this country and abroad,” Carter stated to a crowd at the Iowa State Fair on 08/25/1976.
“Our people respect the American farmer. The family farm has preserved the values—honesty, dependability, hard work and faith—which we need to rediscover as a nation.
Our city people are natural partners with those of us in rural America. What is best for the family farmer in the long run is exactly what is best for the consumer.”

David Chaffetz will discuss his new book, Raiders, Rulers, and Traders: The Horse and the Rise of Empires. This event will take place in the Carter Library theater and will be free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and can be signed by the author following the talk.

Join us on September 22 as we hear author, documentarian, and musician Andrew Greer talk about his book, More Than a President: Sundays with Jimmy Carter, the first book featuring President Carter's work to be published since his passing. He will be in conversation with Kim Carter Fuller, niece of President and Mrs. Carter, who took over President Carter's Sunday School lessons.

Books will be available to purchase through our museum store and the author will be available to sign following the conversation.

When Jimmy Carter was announced as the 2002 recipient for the Nobel Peace Prize, the reaction was "well, duh" by everyone except himself, as shown here in the prize offer letter where he asked Rosalynn if he should accept the prize. :)

Happy 80th birthday to former President Bill Clinton!

As Governor of Arkansas during President Jimmy Carter’s administration, Clinton and Carter did not always agree on policy, but they developed a lasting mutual respect for one another’s commitment to public service. The respect continued throughout their careers, and in 1999 President Clinton awarded both President and Mrs. Carter the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
