Today is South Africa's first Atlanta match for the World Cup. On March 5, 1977, President Carter met in the Roosevelt Room with Gatsha Buthelezi, Chief Executive Councilor of the Kwa Zulu in South Africa. Buthelezi served as prime minister to the Zulu royal family from 1954 until his death in 2023. While often seen as controversial, Buthelezi worked to end apartheid in South Africa and served in Nelson Mandela's cabinet.
