During California’s devastating wildfires, incarcerated firefighters have historically made up as much as 30% of the state’s wildfire firefighting force. In 2025, more than 1,100 incarcerated firefighters worked alongside professional crews to help protect homes, neighborhoods, and lives.

When communities were in danger, these men and women ran toward the flames while others were running away from them.

Their service is a reminder that people are more than the worst mistake they have ever made.

Many individuals with past convictions continue to make meaningful contributions to their communities every day. Their stories deserve to be seen, their growth deserves to be recognized, and their efforts deserve to be acknowledged.

At INMATES, we believe in sharing information, highlighting resilience, and recognizing people who continue to overcome the odds.

Because surviving the odds is worth celebrating.
