One of my least favorite jobs is installing backup cameras on pickup trucks.
Not because they're hard.
Actually, they're pretty simple from a technical standpoint.
The annoying part is crawling underneath dirty trucks, getting covered in dust, routing wires through tight spaces, and finding the cleanest path from the rear of the vehicle all the way to the front.
It's one of those jobs where the customer sees a clean backup camera on the screen...
But they don't see the battle that happened underneath the truck to make it happen 😅
Still, it's all worth it when the final product works exactly the way it's supposed to.

This is one of the most important parts of any install: Quality Control 🔥
Before delivering this vehicle back to the customer, we verified:
• Radio powers on correctly
• Sound is working properly
• Steering wheel controls respond correctly
• Backup camera activates when shifted into reverse
• Parking guidelines are positioned properly
The install may be done, but our process isn't complete until we've tested everything and made sure the customer receives a vehicle that's ready to enjoy.

Installing a backup camera? The first thing you need to find is the reverse trigger wire.
In this example, I'm working on a pickup truck and using the reverse light circuit to identify the correct wire.
Here's the process:
✅ Put the vehicle in reverse
✅ Identify which bulb illuminates
✅ Access the wiring behind the light
✅ Carefully expose the wires for testing
✅ Use a digital multimeter to verify the circuit
The key is making sure:
• The wires don't touch each other while testing
• You have the correct polarity
• You're seeing close to 12 volts when the vehicle is in reverse
That 12-volt signal is what tells your radio to switch over to the backup camera screen.

Before working on your vehicle's electrical system, always disconnect the ground (negative battery terminal) first.
This simple step helps reduce the risk of:
