Georgia Innocence Project's mission is to free innocent people from prison and mitigate the causes and consequences of wrongful convictions in Georgia.

After fighting his wrongful incarceration for nearly 21 years, Marquez Powell was finally fully exonerated and free on June 18, 2026! Marquez Powell was wrongfully convicted in 2008 for a murder in Atlanta, Georgia, that he did not commit. He was only 20 years old when the State alleged that he participated in a plan to rob his best friend who was fatally shot by someone else. We are elated to welcome Marquez into Georgia's community of innocent freed and exonerated people.

Today marks the 27th anniversary of Calvin C. Johnson Jr.'s freedom!

On June 15, 1999, Calvin Johnson was released from prison after 16 years of wrongful incarceration after DNA testing cleared his name. Represented by The Innocence Project in New York, Calvin was the first person in Georgia to be exonerated using DNA evidence. Calvin soon became a steadfast partner of Georgia Innocence Project when we were founded in 2002.

Join us in honoring Calvin's Freedom Anniversary with a gift to his memorial fund which provides reentry support to fellow freed Georgians: https://www.georgiainnocenceproject.org/act/calvin-c-johnson-jr-memorial-fund/

Tiffany Bush, Pro Bono Coordinating Attorney at Georgia Innocence Project, facilitated the 'BIPOC Staff Leadership Retreat' and 'Searching for Synergy: Abolitionist Community within the Innocence Network' breakout session (pictured left to right: Tiffany, John Marlow, Stephanie Spurgeon, and Marriam Oliver), at the recent Innocence Network Conference in Chicago. She had a great time connecting about BIPOC resistance in innocence space, as well as, discussing practical solutions to incorporate into innocence work to avoid inadvertently reinforcing harms.

While nothing can replace the years that were stolen, we're glad to see these Wrongful Conviction and Incarceration Compensation payments starting to be made. After over four years of advocacy, this policy win becoming tangible support for people who have been wrongfully convicted and wrongfully incarcerated in Georgia is meaningful. We hope it enables economic stability and opportunity for them to rebuild their lives.

Here's a behind-the-scenes glimpse of our legal team. The pictured Working Group meets regularly to discuss applications for assistance and to determine whether cases move forward to screening. Since our founding in 2002, we have received over 9,200 applications for assistance.
