“America’s Book Club,” an interview series hosted by philanthropist David M. Rubenstein, launches Oct. 19 on C-SPAN. The first guest will be John Grisham. The conversations, conducted in iconic settings such as the Library of Congress, the National Archives and the Folger Shakespeare Library, will explore “ideas that shaped America’s past, challenge the nation’s present, and inspire our future.” Future authors will include Amy Coney Barrett, Stacy Schiff, Walter Isaacson and Jodi Picoult. My former Book World editor Marie Arana is the senior executive producer of the series. Arana and Rubenstein talked about the show at the National Book Festival last month (video). Source

It’s National Read Day and this was my selection. Du Bois’ prose is lyrical and intoxicating. He takes hard and horrible scenes and requires your attention by the way he arranges the imagery. 200 years later, every thing, although arguable, is still relevant. The book is public domain. For a first read or a revisit, it is worth it.
