Inclimate weather is approaching our state this weekend, and we pray 🙏 that everyone stays safe and is prepared for the storm.
Immediate Actions During A Power Outage For Swimming Pool Owners:
1 Turn Off Power Breakers: Go to your electrical panel and shut off the breaker to the pool equipment to prevent it from cycling and potentially breaking when power returns to the house.
2 Drain Equipment: Remove drain plugs from the pump(s), filter, and heater, and open all valves to let water flow out, preventing ice expansion.
3 Disconnect Motor: Disconnect the pump motor to ensure it can't turn on when power returns, then remove the pump pot lid.
4 Insulate & Cover: Wrap the equipment with blankets, towels, or pool noodles, and cover the entire pad with a tarp to block wind and trap heat, raising the temperature.
5 Skimmers: To prevent your pool skimmer from cracking in freezing weather during a power outage, the best method is to place a plastic bottle inside: an empty plastic bottle (like a water bottle or small milk jug) filled about one-third with non-toxic pool antifreeze (or just air if no antifreeze), capped tightly, and dropped into the skimmer to absorb ice expansion. the bottle (even without antifreeze) provides a crushable buffer for ice expansion, but adding antifreeze inside the bottle ensures it stays liquid and protects the skimmer, making it the recommended practice for proper winterization.

Inclimate Weather Advice:
While salt provides some freeze resistance, saltwater pools are not immune to freezing, and significant damage can occur to equipment like the salt cell, plumbing, skimmers and equipment if not properly prepared for winter. The salt water in pools lowers the freezing point from 32°F (0°C) for fresh water to around 28°F (-2°C) for saltwater pools.
Immediate Actions During A Power Outage:
1 Turn Off Power Breakers: Go to your electrical panel and shut off the breaker to the pool equipment to prevent it from cycling and potentially breaking when power returns to the house.
2 Drain Equipment: Remove drain plugs from the pump(s), filter, and heater, and open all valves to let water flow out, preventing ice expansion. If your equipment is below water level, keep the valves shut so you don’t drain the pool.
