Pulse Comix Episode Four "Popeye" 02/22/2017

We're back with another episode of Pulse Comix. In this episode, Deranta' and Kris talk about an early Robin Williams movie, Popeye.

Released in 1980, Popeye was Williams first starring role in big budget film and showcased his many talents he displayed in his standup and shows like Mork and Mindy. It was also a venture into new territory for comic book movies. Popeye wasn't you typical super hero character yet Williams breath refreshing life into a comic that had been around since the early 30's. The film was directed by well known Hollywood great Robert Altman, who'd filmed Oscar nominated films like Mash and Nashville. It showed that Hollywood was taking a serious look at the possibilities of using comic book/strip characters as source material for Hollywood films.

Although the movie made 60 million on a 20 million budget, it was not received well by critics. Rotten Tomatoes has it rated at 59% Tomatoes, which compared to some of the things put out today, ain't so bad. I enjoyed the film when it came out but what did I know, I was just a kid.

Pulse Comix Episode Three "Flash Gordon" 02/01/2017

Welcome to another episode of Pulse Comix where we discuss all things comic books: movies, tv shows, you name it.

This week, Deranta' and Kris talk about 1980's cult classic "Flash Gordon". It starred Sam Jones as Flash Gordon, Melody Anderson as Dale Arden, Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless and Topol as Doctor Hans Zarkov. It also has an early appearance from future James Bond Timothy Dalton.

At the time of its release, Flash Gordon was considered a box office bomb. But over the years, the film has received cult status stemming from DVD sales and especially with the help of Sam Jones appearance in "Ted". This movie has 80's written all over it, from the flashy costumes and sets to the soundtrack from Queen.

So take a trip down memory lane with us as we talk about "Flash Gordon".

Pulse Comix Episode Two " How great was 1978's Superman?!?" 01/17/2017

Hey everyone, I'm back with the 2nd episode of Pulse Comix. This week, Deranta' and Kris Hubert talk about one of my favorite movies of all times, 1978's Superman. This movie changed the game. And they are back with guest Dallas Howell.

It featured Marlon Brando as Jor-El, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, Margot Kidder as Lois Lane and Christopher Reeves as the titular Superman. Superman is the 1st super hero movie to have a serious impact on the society. Like Dallas says, it's the 1st time they got it right...a super hero's powers were portrayed like we always imagined. Do you believe a man can fly. With Superman, you could.
If you're a fan of this classic, then join in on the discussion with Deranta', Kris and Dallas as they break down Richard Donner's Superman.

Pulse Comix Episode One "In the Beginning" 01/02/2017

Happy New Years everyone. Let's hope that 2017 is little brighter than year-that-shall-not-be-named.

I'm glad to announce that I've been working on a new project, Pulse Comix. I gathered a couple of comic book collectors (Deranta' Avaloy and Kris Hubert) and film them talking about all things comics: book, movies, tv shows, you name it. Sometime we even have a special guest.

It's a ton of fun breaking down the genre, what we like and don't like and sometime reminiscing about the past. That leads us to the 1st episode where Kris, Deranta' and special guest Dallas Howell talk about some of the great tv shows of the late 60's/early 70's, shows like Adam West's Batman, Linda Carter's Wonder Woman and who can forget about The Incredible Hulk.

So enjoy this trip down memory lane with the 1st episode of Pulse Comix!

Attention all you Dragon Con fans!

Dragon Con is one of the most popular fan conventions held in the US. For one special weekend each year, people from all over the country travel to Atlanta in order to meet and greet with celebrities, dress up as some of their favorite characters and mingle with like-minded people. But one of the biggest reasons people visit Dragon Con every year is to party! Ok, party might sound too amateurish, let's say celebrate. And boy, do they celebrate all weekend long!

Gunnar Ohberg visited Dragon Con this year and wrote a 4 part story chronicling his adventures. Over the next 4 days, I'll release each part so you'll have a chance to re-visit that rowdy weekend. Hell, maybe you had a similar adventure yourself.

***This story is not for kids!!!***

It's an honest account of one persons travels over that weekend. It's not quite "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" but give it some time.

So sit back, grab your favorite beverage of choice and reminisce with Gunnar and he tells you all about his weekend at Dragon Con!

It’s almost noon and I should already be on the road to Dragon Con, but in truth I haven’t even started packing yet. I fall out of bed and wince as the bourbon in my gut does a somersault. Not how I imagined this morning. I’m racing down I-75 to scho…
