We lost another great civil rights leader. At only 11 years of age in 1965, Joanne Bland was one of the youngest foot-soldiers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday, in Selma, AL.

Arrested more than ten times before the age of 10, she was highly principled and direct, demanded respect and yet at the same time, she loved fiercely.

Every time I’d see her she’d say, “Come over here and get some love.”

In her own words, “I don’t need you in your happy place. I need you on the battlefield until all lives really do matter. You are here to serve, not to save. Leave the saving to God; don’t be anyone’s savior. Be a history-maker and vote!”

On this MLK day, here’s a new podcast episode dedicated to the principles of non-violence and the legacy of the civil rights era.

Timely and relevant to present day circumstances.

Sad to report the death of one of the great civil rights activists of all time, Dr. Lynda Blackmon Lowery. At the young age of 14, on Bloody Sunday, Lynda was beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge by Alabama state troopers and recieved 32 stitches in her head. Two weeks later, she became the youngest person to walk from Selma to Montgomery, along with MLK 300 others, for the Selma Voting Rights movement, turning 15 on the second day, on that road to freedom.

I last saw her just a few weeks ago in Selma, where she lovingly teased me for only bringing her two packets of sugar for her coffee. “You know I like everything to be sweet!”

She was the favorite guest speaker to all my civil rights groups. One of the last things she shared was her grandmother’s wise words to her as a teenager fighting for the right to vote.

“Behold, the only thing more powerful than you walking this earth right now is that reflection in the mirror.”

Rest well, dear friend.
Thank you for all the sweet memories.

Endless thanks to for allowing me to teach these beautiful and brilliant non-verbal autistic students for the past six months.

Together, we have studied American history, from the Transatlantic Slave Trade to the assassination of MLK, as well as ancient Greek history, from the Peloponnesian War to the philosophy of Plato, Aristotle and Socrates.

As we learned this week from Plato’s six stages of the ladder of love, education is the source of goodness, happiness and true beauty.

I am sharing this today in observance of World AIDS Day.

In his 1987 Surgeon General’s Report on AIDS, C. Everett Koop wrote: “AIDS education must start at the lowest grade possible as part of any health and hygiene program, with a heavy emphasis on prevention of AIDS and other STDs. The need is critical, and the price of neglect is high.”

Dr. Koop mailed this report to every household in America, the same month I was infected with HIV. I found the report 16 years later in my father’s desk drawer while cleaning out his office after his funeral.

I imagine he kept it to educate himself and to protect my family. I like to believe that he also saved it as a way of staying connected to me.

Thirty-eight years have passed and there is still a striking absence of comprehensive sexual health and HIV/AIDS prevention education in our schools and around our kitchen tables. Faced with the current silence and dismissal of HIV/AIDS awareness by many in public office, I offer this podcast episode. I hope it can educate anyone who wishes to protect themselves and their loved ones from infection.

The price of neglect is still too high.

Competed in the Hyrox men’s solo event in Atlanta. Came in 4th place in my age group (60-64). Not bad for my first attempt.

This talk, recorded in 2020 in a Zoom session at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, explores how we can extend mercy to others and grant ourselves permission to live without self-reproach. The inspiration came from a Penn State student who, after hearing me speak, tweeted the words: "Never leave a conversation until love walks in the room." It was also shaped by the insights my nephews shared with me while playing the video game "Overwatch," revealing some universal wisdom.

I hope it brings some comfort.
