About 17 years ago, I drove from Atlanta to St. Simone's Island to spend a day with author Tina McElroy Ansa. It was a delightful time. We stood on the dock and watched the seagulls and she told me about her life by the water and in her garden, about writing and working part-time as a doucin at the lighthouse. She took me to preserved homes were enslaved Africans once lived in that part of Georgia. Her energy and enthusiasm about life were evident. Jonee, her husband, talked photography and filmmaking. I felt their love. And I remember on the drive back that it was a day well-spent with good, pure people. Learning of her passing on Wednesday jolted me. Another literary luminary gone too soon. Thank you, Tina, for your gifts and grace. Rest well. (Photo of Tina with Jonee at the National Book Club Conference in 2009.)
