You may remember Joseph Askew Sr. from our first story covering his legal battle to keep historic properties from being destroyed and demolished in his hometown. The 77-year-old retiree was one of several Black residents who sued city officials for condemning properties in the townâs Black neighborhoods. In a rare win, the North Carolina Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of the Black residents.
âI feel good. I feel great,â Askew told Capital B after the ruling. To learn more about the legal battle and next steps residents are taking to protect their properties, tap the link in their bio.

đ June is National Homeownership Month. Home pricing and lack of affordable housing inventory in Atlanta remain âhuge problemsâ for Black homebuyers right now, according to Anita Allgood, Invest Atlantaâs vice president of single family & homeownership services. But pessimism about the ability to buy a home and lack of knowledge about what it takes are also a problem, she said.

In a city where there is already a âBlack exodusâ â Black people leaving in large numbers â the rent for the newest âaffordableâ studio apartments in Harlem is $2.3K per month.
Patch reported that the apartments cost applicants who earn 125% of the Area Median Income $2,311 and have a minimum income requirement of $80,000.
Single New Yorkers must make between $79,235 and $128,570 annually to qualify. Couples who want to share a studio must make a combined $146,900 annually.
There is a dishwasher inside each unit, but tenants should plan to foot the bill for their electricity, including [an] electric stove, per the listing. The elevator building offers a laundry room, rooftop patio, virtual doorman, gym, and bike storage.
The not-so-affordable apartments are advertised as Black residents leave urban neighborhoods around the city, particularly Harlem â the center of Black heritage and culture â for more rural locations.
According to Gothamist, New York Cityâs non-Hispanic Black population is declining at one of the fastest rates among major cities in the U.S., only behind Chicago and Detroit. The trend foreshadows what many locals, demographers, and other experts consider upcoming complex political, social, and economic issues. Some observers note that changing demographics raises the unsettling question of whose interests New York City serves.

From đMetro Atlanta has too much available office space to rent and not enough companies willing to fill up the office parks and skyscrapers that define the regionâs skyline.
Large companies continue to grapple with how many of their employees will return to a physical workplace after the pandemic. Some employers are condensing their footprints when their leases end, while others are listing space theyâve rented but no longer need on the sublease market.
Roughly a quarter of the total office space in the metro area is considered vacant and landlords are struggling to fill their buildings. But when factoring in space that companies are renting but no longer want â known as space available for sublease â the picture gets worse.
All the vacant and listed subleased space totals some 44 million square feet. Now at the end of this yearâs second quarter, more than 8.4 million square feet of sublease space was on the market, a 37% increase from the same time last year.
