Five years ago, if a 20 year old gave me advice about my business, I probably would’ve said, “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Today, I listen.

Experience matters. Systems matter. But the world keeps changing, and if you’re building something for the future, you can’t lead with yesterday’s perspective.

The younger generation grew up in a different world. They see things differently. They understand things I might not.

My job isn’t just to teach them.

It’s also to be willing to learn from them.

The longer I do this, the more open I’ve become to listening, collaborating and evolving.

You can have experience and still have something to learn.

Being an owner means realizing it’s not about you anymore.

There were times the choice was simple:

Pay myself or pay my employees.
Pay myself or pay the rent.

The team got paid.
The rent got paid.

Building this required sacrificing my own financial freedom, wants and comforts because my responsibility became bigger than myself.

That’s what ownership means to me.

You take care of the people helping you build the vision.

Because if you expect people to believe in what you’re building, they need to know you believe in them too.

Every morning, before the meetings, the business, the noise and everything the day is going to demand from me, I make a choice about what I allow to speak into my spirit.

Because what comes first sets the tone for everything that follows.

If you feel that stirring inside you like something is missing maybe the answer isn’t adding more to your life.

Maybe it’s putting God back at the center of it.

Faith isn’t something I try to fit into my schedule.

It comes first.

The “lone wolf” mentality is overrated.

You don’t have to figure everything out by yourself.

There are people who have already walked the path you’re trying to take. People who have made the mistakes, learned the lessons and laid the groundwork before you.

Pay attention to them.
Ask questions.
Seek mentorship.
Mimic what works.

And if you’re fortunate enough to be part of a great team, lean into it.

You can go faster alone.

But you’ll go a lot further when you’re willing to learn from the people who’ve already been there.

Sometimes losing the identity you built your life around is how you find your purpose.

I thought I was going to be a professional football player. That was the plan. That was my identity.

And when that was taken away not once, but twice I had to answer a difficult question:

Now what?

It took months to realize that football was something I did. It wasn’t all that I was.

I still had more in me.
I could still make an impact.
It was just going to look different than I imagined.

Sometimes the dream changes so the purpose can reveal itself.
