Sharing the keys to a successful career in scientific research and increasing student exposure to acc
During your first biology course every student learns about ‘the codon’ that is the key to unlocking the information encoded by DNA. Discovery of this basic biological concept, called the ‘genetic code’, is often one that intrigues students and initially peaks their interest in biology. Unfortunately, many students do not consider how this early excitement and interest for biology could be translated to a career. Outside of pursing medical or dental degrees, the option of pursuing a career as a research scientist is often entirely ignored and uninvestigated. Typically thought to be something pursued only by Albert Einstein-ish individuals with off-the-chart IQs. It is the goal of Beyond the Codon to dispel this myth and encourage high-school and undergraduate students to consider this as a viable, and well-worth it, career to pursue! Moreover, during our workshop sessions we share insight into the different types of research careers from academia and government, to industry/biotech.

What a legacy. Whenever I get sad or depressed about the current state of things, I stay encouraged when I see the values that great humans stand for, and fight, for in real life. Rest well. Gloria and Dolly so close in time is a tough pill to swallow 😞

Summertime has been busy with both work and play. Being a part of the faculty for SITCs Women in Cancer Immunotherapy Network (WIN) Leadership Institute this year was a little of both! I shared tips, and helpful resources, on how to build your team. Pulling on my experiences from both running a research lab in academia & growing teams in biopharma. Honestly, I think I gain just as much from participating as the attendees do! It’s an empowering and engaging 2-day event full of panels, talks, & great fellowship.

in San Diego was a walk down research career memory lane for me. Ran into former colleagues and students from academia. As well as a couple of luminaries in the field of cancer immunotherapy from my NCI post-doc and early days in biopharma. Fun 🤩 bonus was having a co-worker send over a picture 📷 of me with the SITC vice president in a pamphlet they were handing out at the meeting.
