What We Can Learn from Master P 02/02/2021

What We Can Learn from Master P
Before Roc Nation brunches helped paint the modern portrait of Black excellence in Hip-Hop, a bright young multi-hyphenate from New Orleans gave the music industry an early glimpse at what entrepreneurship and ownership could really look like for Black artists. Since the turn of the 90s, Percy Miller ― or more famously known as Master P ― has proven that there are no limits to what creatives can achieve when approaching their careers with business acumen. Compared to Jay Z, Diddy, and his other contemporaries, Miller is one of rap’s least celebrated moguls, but his name remains in that circle for a reason.

He founded No Limit Records in 1991, the legendary New Orleans record label that predominantly featured southern artists such as Lil Romeo, Mia X, Mystikal, Curren$y, C-Murder, and Silkk the Shocker. By 1995, Miller had inked an unprecedented 80-20 distribution deal, especially for a Southern Hip-Hop label, with Priority records that allowed

“Jaguar” is the cosmic hug the world needs right now 01/31/2021

“Jaguar” is the cosmic hug the world needs right now
Victoria Monet isn’t new to creating songs that hypnotize and capture the heart of millions. After all, she boasts songwriting credits on hits like “thank, u next” and “7 rings” by Ariana Grande, “Work from Home” by Fifth Harmony, and the more recent “Do It” by Chloe x Halle. She has spent time behind the scenes helping others but the aptly titled Jaguar shows us that she is just as powerful in the shadows as she is in the spotlight.

Channeling the energy of the titled animal, the collection of 8 songs not only teaches us the joys of sensuality and hunger but a lesson in affirming your personal power and strength. Monet’s music has always been a celebration of tenderness and the feminine but for Jaguar, she wanted to discover more about herself. In an interview with The Cut in May, Monet told the magazine that with the extra time quarantine has given us, she has been asking herself questions like, "what

Editor’s Note: Fashion’s Realism Era
Another Fashion Month has come and gone but, luckily, the runways' remnants are here to rub in all of the "you had to be there" moments most of us regular folk missed. I assume my invitation got lost in the mail yet again, but that's neither here nor there. As expected, many 2015 trends - vibrant yellow, frayed-hem denim, and off-the-shoulder sass - bled over into this year's collections. We saw avant-garde embellishing like the "maximalism" at 5:31 Jerome (a term I assume was coined by the designer), and rainbow tweed that has become synonymous

with Lagerfeld's most recent Chanel collections. While flamboyant ornamentation will never truly die, as it is quite relative to fashion design, relatable, comfort-centric fashion is the newest trend to overtake the mode scene. Revised workwear, block-heel shoes, and loose fitting 70s tops have been revitalized by high-end brands and is the bulk of what you'll find on the racks at fast-fashion

Singer Tate Is High-Street Atlanta 01/29/2021

Singer Tate Is High-Street Atlanta
Tate wears dress by JD Noble.

Only because you guys love it when I open articles with a background story, I shall do the same today. I promise it'll all come together. Here goes! I'm winging it by myself at an art event, wishing for something to captivate me. Then, I see this tiny framed girl in a patterned robe tied over a crisp all-white look and co***ne white sneakers. Well-defined personal style? Check! I'm all in at that point, but it was Tate's performance of a "Hotlinebling" remix that truly won me over. She had a presence that was unlike any of the other artists, with a high-street vibe that complimented her sound. Fast-forward to now, her version of the tune is on my favorite playlist, and I got the opportunity to not only dress her for this editorial, but we chatted it up some as well. One thing is undoubtedly for sure: Tate is Atlanta's best kept secret. You know, the kind that's so damn good you must tell everyone about it? Basically,

Portraitist Charlee Black Reflects on Community 01/28/2021

Portraitist Charlee Black Reflects on Community In an uncut discussion, photographer Charlee Black shares how communities (of women) influence her imaging; relinquishing work-related misery and her contribution to photography.
Words by Charlee Black. Edited by Sasha-Gay.

Early beginnings
I’m a 24 year old portrait photographer based in the Midwest. I have been shooting since I was little [when] my mom use to buy me little disposable 2 packs cameras. It was my bi-weekly treat. I'd shoot my dogs or plants and s**t. She would develop them and we’d pick up another pack. I was given my first dslr in middle school, which was crummy hand me down Nikon with a kit lens that got me through high school. I was lucky enough to purchase another camera right after graduation along with some gear. Maybe it's being raised by a single mom, or just being frugal but gear or whatever isn't big for me. I always felt gear can be an excuse. I can make whatever work. Your girl is crafty!

Sarah Dorleus’ Emerging Artistic Voice 01/27/2021

Sarah Dorleus’ Emerging Artistic Voice
Nineteen year-old painter, Sarah Dorleus, may be young, but her work already transcends any societal limitation. Her presently poised, and mature nature is not only admirable but is also a noticeable theme of what she creates. The Brooklyn-born, ATL living student, shared with me details of her work, aspirations, and, as you will soon see, what makes her voice so distinct.

Teachers of poetry often put emphasis on the importance of developing voice, something of which I was reminded when speaking with Sarah. Interestingly, she's been designing her artistic persona from as early as elementary school when sketching and personal style became active in her life. After graduating high school, Sarah took a serious approach by choosing to study art. The early exposure to creating (writing included), mixed in with her Haitian-American upbringing - what she notes as being "really

Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech” 01/26/2021

Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech”
Virgil Abloh (born September 30, 1980) is an African-American multihyphenate - designer, artist, and DJ - who is the founder and CEO of Milan based fashion house Off-White. More recently, Ablohh made history when appointed as artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s Menswear, the first Black person to hold the title. Abloh has decades of experience in fashion design, engineering as well as architecture studies and music, which he flawlessly integrates into his clothing and artworks. The range of his creative practice has never more evident than his exhibition “Figures of Speech,” currently on display at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.

Abloh’s exhibition is the first of its kind for the High, taking viewers on a deep dive into his creative process, discipline in the arts, and collaborations ranging from musicians, fashion designers, and architects. The exhibition title itself draws

Measurable Solutions 01/24/2021

Measurable Solutions
On Tuesday, we released a statement postponing our Trial+Error Summit scheduled to commence tomorrow morning. It was the hardest decision we've made as a team in the early stages of growth. From a business standpoint, we had many considerations, and I'm happy we chose well. Better yet, that we chose right. In the days since opting to focus on current justice initiatives, I find myself grappling with a new source of anger unique to those of us at the juncture of oppression and creative praxis.

I am weary at how activism is never a choice for the Black artist. *For the purposes of this piece, art/artist is used to encompass all forms of creative output.* While practitioners in dominant cultures are encouraged to create without bounds, Black art is not afforded that same privilege. No matter the artist's medium - be it visual, textual, sonic or with the body - we are by default working within parameters, and in the overarching industry that is representation.
