Imagine a bison whose horns stretched wider than you are tall—an icon of the Ice Age, majestic and massive. Meet Bison latifrons, the long-horned giant that once dominated North America from Canada to Mexico.

This wasn't your modern bison. Bison latifrons weighed over a ton and stood nearly 8 feet tall at the shoulder, but its most breathtaking feature was its horns—spanning over 2 meters (7 feet) tip to tip, the widest of any bovid in history. These spectacular curves weren't just for show; they were tools for display, defense, and dominance in the vast, open grasslands of the Pleistocene.

Roaming alongside mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and early humans, this mega-herbivore was a keystone of Ice Age ecosystems. As climates warmed and habitats shifted at the end of the Pleistocene, Bison latifrons gradually faded from the land—leaving behind fossils that tell the story of a wilder, colder, and grander America.

Strange fact: Its horns were so wide, they could easily frame a human standing upright—a living monument to the scale of Ice Age megafauna. 🐂❄️

A true titan of a lost world.

Majungasaurus was a fierce theropod dinosaur that lived about 70–66 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period on the island of Madagascar. Its name means “Mahajanga lizard,” after the region where its fossils were discovered. Reaching around 6–7 meters (20–23 feet) in length and weighing up to 1 ton, Majungasaurus was the top predator of its environment. It belonged to the abelisaurid family—short-skulled, thick-headed carnivores with tiny, stubby arms, similar to Carnotaurus.

Majungasaurus had a short, deep skull with powerful jaws and serrated teeth designed for crushing bone and tearing flesh. Its robust body and muscular legs suggest it was an ambush predator, likely hunting large herbivorous dinosaurs such as Rapetosaurus. Remarkably, fossil evidence shows that Majungasaurus engaged in cannibalism—feeding on members of its own species—making it one of the few dinosaurs known to have done so.

With its bony crest on the top of the skull and rough-textured face, Majungasaurus had a distinctive, intimidating appearance. As one of the last surviving abelisaurids before the mass extinction, it represents the peak of predatory dinosaur evolution in isolated Madagascar.

Nothosaurus was a semi-aquatic marine reptile that lived about 240–210 million years ago during the Middle to Late Triassic period. Its name means “false lizard,” reflecting its mix of land and sea adaptations. Growing up to 4 meters (13 feet) long, Nothosaurus had a slender, streamlined body, long neck, and sharp, conical teeth perfect for catching slippery fish and squid. Its limbs were partially adapted into flippers, allowing it to swim efficiently, but it could also crawl onto land to rest, bask, or lay eggs—much like modern seals. With its powerful jaws and flexible body, Nothosaurus was one of the top predators in the shallow coastal seas of ancient Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Scientists believe it used an ambush strategy, lurking near the seafloor before striking quickly at prey. As one of the earliest ancestors of the later plesiosaurs, Nothosaurus represents an important evolutionary step in the transition from land-dwelling reptiles to fully marine predators.
