WE PREVAIL ANYWAY is my third and most precious poetry book. My biggest inspiration was the passing(and beautiful life) of my grandmother, Dorothy Calhoun Waters! She was the Geechi goddess and matriarch. Her departure cracked my core but allowed me to let morning in through those cracks and write some beautiful pieces! First of all.. mama looking a li strong lol

Second… I am highly critical of myself when it comes to my art.. ESPECIALLY performing because it’s been a while since I consistently got on stage. It feels foreign to me now. I get up on stage sometimes and get so excited and/or nervous I end up speaking really fast or incorrectly saying certain parts.

Nothing that repetition can’t fix tho. We move! Also I’m always open to feedback 🫶🏿

Just because they fail to see you does not mean that you do not shine, are not bright, or cannot be seen. Do not let them dictate your light my love!

One of my favorite parts of my book are the forewords. Usually there is only one foreword but I had two amazing people in mind and decided to go with both. One of which was 🫶🏿

If you don’t know, Davelle has been falsely accused of committing a heinous crime and is currently still imprisoned for something that he did not do! Around 408 days so far and he still maintains his innocence.

I chose him because he is a PhD candidate, is a Master of Public Health holder, has traveled countries to hold the hands and fight alongside people who just want to be free, has stood in protest in this country to say the names of people no longer alive to say their own, has released amazing music (Groovy Velle on streaming platforms), has an amazing sense of style, etc. Such a beautiful person with a mind and creative sense that I admire. Someone who has and is continuing to prevail through many bad things in this life.

I had to screenshot each page of my book and send it to him. Squinting to read each poem because the pictures came through small but her persisted. His foreword let me know that he saw me clearly! That my words echoed!
