Arthritis is one of the most common health challenges facing senior dogs. As joints age, everyday activities like climbing stairs, jumping onto the couch, or getting up after a nap can become more difficult. Many dogs hide discomfort surprisingly well, so subtle changes in movement, activity level, or willingness to play may be the first clues. With veterinary care, appropriate exercise, weight management, and pain control, many senior dogs continue to enjoy happy, active lives for years.

Most people are surprised to learn that dogs can experience age-related cognitive decline similar to dementia in humans. Senior dogs may become confused, seem lost in familiar places, forget routines, sleep more during the day and less at night, or become unusually anxious or clingy. These changes are not simply "old age." Recognizing the signs early and discussing them with your veterinarian can help improve a dog's comfort, confidence, and quality of life.

One of the most remarkable discoveries from studies like the Dog Aging Project is how much dogs and humans have in common as they grow older. Dogs can develop arthritis, cancer, cognitive decline, hearing loss, vision changes, and many of the same age-related conditions that affect people. While aging may slow our companions down a little, it doesn't diminish the love, loyalty, or joy they bring to our lives. Understanding the changes that come with age helps us provide the comfort, care, and veterinary support senior dogs deserve.

Military working dogs have served America for generations, and their story is still being written today. More than 2,000 highly trained dogs continue to serve with the U.S. military around the world, helping detect explosives, protect service members, patrol military installations, and perform specialized missions. While technology continues to advance, there are still jobs where a dog's nose, courage, and loyalty remain unmatched. More than a century after Sergeant Stubby earned America's admiration, dogs are still serving under the American flag

Sergeant Stubby was a stray who became the mascot of the 102nd Infantry Regiment during World War I. He warned soldiers of incoming gas attacks, located wounded troops, and boosted morale throughout the war. By the time he returned home, he was one of America's most celebrated dogs and marched in parades across the country.

In 1918, American serviceman Lee Duncan discovered a litter of German Shepherd puppies in a bombed-out kennel in France during World War I. One puppy became Rin Tin Tin. Brought to America, he went on to star in dozens of films and became one of Hollywood's first canine superstars. His story of rescue, loyalty, and perseverance captured the hearts of millions and made him a lasting American icon.

If you suspect your dog is overheating, every minute matters. Knowing what to do while seeking veterinary care can help improve your dog's chances of recovery.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency, but there are important steps you can take immediately. Move your dog to a shaded or air-conditioned area, offer cool (not ice-cold) water, and use cool wet towels on the body, especially around the neck, chest, and paws. Avoid ice baths or extremely cold water, which can sometimes make cooling less effective. Even if your dog seems to improve, veterinary care is still essential. Quick action and professional treatment give dogs the best chance of a full recovery.

Know the Warning Signs
Dogs can't tell us when they're overheating, so it's important to recognize the warning signs. Acting quickly can make the difference between a close call and a life-threatening emergency.
Heat stroke can develop rapidly, especially during hot or humid weather. Early signs may include excessive panting, heavy drooling, bright red gums, weakness, or unusual restlessness. As the condition worsens, dogs may vomit, stumble, collapse, or become unresponsive. Heat stroke is always a veterinary emergency. If you suspect your dog is overheating, move them to a cooler area immediately and contact your veterinarian without delay.

Hot weather can be dangerous for dogs much faster than many people realize. Every summer, dogs suffer heat-related emergencies that are often preventable with a little planning and awareness.
Dogs cool themselves primarily by panting, which makes them much more vulnerable to overheating than people. High temperatures, humidity, hot pavement, and parked vehicles can quickly create dangerous conditions. Heat stroke can develop rapidly and become life-threatening if not treated immediately. Providing shade, fresh water, and avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day are simple steps that can help keep dogs safe. Prevention is always easier than emergency treatment.

Some dogs wait quietly in shelters.
Others eventually find themselves center stage.
Events like Broadway Barks bring together theater performers, rescue groups, and adoptable shelter animals for one unforgettable goal:helping dogs find loving homes.
For one afternoon, the spotlight shifts away from the actors and onto the rescue dogs beside them.
And honestly? The dogs usually steal the show.
Because every shelter dog deserves:• applause• a second chance• and someone waiting backstage to take them home.
