On this day in 1995, a series of tragic incidents across metro Atlanta highlighted a danger that still exists today: extreme heat inside parked vehicles.
As temperatures and humidity continue to rise across Georgia, it's important to remember that the inside of a vehicle can heat up much faster than many people realize. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures inside a car can rise about 20 degrees in just 10 minutes—even when it's only in the 70s outside.
This story isn't just about looking back. It's a reminder to always check the back seat, keep vehicles locked when not in use, and never leave a child unattended in a vehicle.
A safety message that remains just as important today as it was 31 years ago.

⚡ Nature is powerful.

These photos, shared by Jefferson Fire Dept and Paramount Landscape Group, show the aftermath of a lightning strike on a tree in Jefferson.

Lightning strikes can cause so much heat and pressure inside a tree that it can cause the trunk to crack, split, or even explode.

It’s also a good reminder that storm hazards don’t always end when the rain does. Damaged trees and weakened limbs can remain a threat long after the storm has moved out.

One of my favorite parts of the job is meeting the next generation. 💜

I recently had the chance to spend time with a group of young ladies from A Teen's Choice, Inc. , an organization based in Rome, GA that focuses on developing future leaders. They toured the station, learned about broadcasting, and asked some really thoughtful questions about careers in television and weather.

These young ladies were bright, engaged, and full of potential. The future is definitely in good hands. ✨

Hurricane season is here. 🌀

You don’t have to live on the coast to feel the impacts in Georgia. Hurricane Helene was a reminder that it only takes one storm to make a major impact.

These photos are from Elbert County, Georgia after yesterday’s storms and WOW. 🌩️ This happened just outside of our viewing area, but I still wanted to share because it’s a good reminder that you do not need a tornado to get serious damage.

The National Weather Service has confirmed this was straight-line wind damage, not a tornado. They were out there today surveying the area so that they could see just how strong the winds were.

A lot of times people hear “not a tornado” and think that means the storm wasn’t dangerous. Straight-line winds can still knock down trees, damage homes, and leave behind a mess like this.

If you’re in the area, be careful around downed trees and power lines while cleanup continues.
