Excited to join a panel at the 45th annual Black Entertainment & Sports Lawyers Association Conference with some fellow music lawyers to talk about one of the most pressing issues in the music industry today — streaming and artist compensation.
Streaming continues to reshape how music is made, shared, and valued, questions around fairness, transparency, and equity are more important than ever. We’ll dig into how royalties are distributed, what’s changing in label and publishing deals, and how artists and their teams can push for better terms and outcomes.
Although I’ve been speaking a lot lately about AI and the impact of technology on media and the law, music is also evolving in major ways — music started this digital streaming evolution with , and the fight for artist equity and streaming continues.
Music was one of my first practice areas outside of film and TV, and it’s great to reconnect with that world in such a pivotal moment. Also looking forward to connecting with a lot of my fellow attorneys, as many of us “grew up” with and gained many mentors here!
If you’re down in San Juan for the conference, let’s make sure we connect!

✅ Keynote Speech ✅
On Friday, I was honored to give the keynote at my alma mater Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy “Conspicuous Consumers” two-day symposium, exploring how consumers are reshaping the boundaries of law in the age of AI.
From Napster to streaming, from Amazon’s dark patterns to AI’s data-driven creativity, my speech (followed by a Q&A) traced how consumers have evolved from passive participants in the legal system to active architects of market and legal change.
Today, the consumer doesn’t just buy — they generate, train, and influence the very technologies and markets that define modern life.
As AI blurs the line between creator and consumer, law must once again evolve to protect agency, consent, and transparency in an era where personalization often comes at the cost of autonomy.
The Symposium attendees included faculty from New York University School of Law, Georgetown Law, Harvard Law and other faculty and academics, practitioners and policy makers from across the country.
I was so thankful to spend time with the other speakers, my former Dean and grateful for my Board members, founding member, Hon. Betty Staton, NYU Law 1979 and Carol Cespedes, come to support me.

Deeply grateful to Grambling State University for the honor of delivering your Constitution Day keynote. 💛🖤
Thank you to Dr. Jr., Provost Dr. Connie Walton, the faculty, staff, and the incredible students who are truly the heartbeat of this institution.
Speaking on Life, Liberty, Freedom, and Prosperity at an HBCU with such a proud legacy was powerful beyond words. Imparting the words and call to action for these students to honor and defend our Constitution in this fragile and fractured democracy was a career highlight.
HBCUs have always defied the odds, shaping leaders who carry our communities, our country, and our Constitution forward. I was proud to stand with you in that tradition!
I am not the judge nor the jury. I’m just here to tie it all together from a legal perspective.
Thanks Fredricka Whitfield for another insightful discussion.
Have a nice day! ☀️
When you go to law school, you learn how to read and think differently, how to connect the dots. To issue spot, to IRAC a problem that you’ve been given (Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion). How to spot red herrings (non issues) but also how things fit into the big picture.
We taped this segment this morning in the 7a hour…I asked the producers prior if we could get a question regarding how these other things…DV and Richard’s testimony tie into RICO.
You’re welcome…
Thanks for a great conversation!
I love to unpack things. Let’s talk about that RICO case…. It was great to talk about it today with on
Cassie’s testimony was pretty explosive yesterday. What’s the defense’s strategy is cross examining Cassie?
While the US newsfeed is focused on the testimony on the “president’s” lawyers trying to remove the CONSTITUTIONAL protections of birthright citizenship 🙄, I broke it down for with .
