Such a great day of learning with our teacher candidates!
Grateful to welcome Dre. into our “room” to share what student centered teaching looks like in practice. Our teacher candidates had the opportunity to learn from a current practitioner who intentionally builds relationships, honors students, and uses meaningful connections to deepen learning.
This is why I love bringing practitioners into our classroom. Teacher candidates need opportunities to see the concepts we discuss come to life!
Thank you, Dre. , for pouring into the next generation of educators!
What an incredible experience at the UNCF Empower Me Tour Roundtable Dinner!
I enjoyed an amazing conversation with students exploring careers as a writer.
The highlight of the evening was watching 11 students receive $2,000 merit scholarships on the spot! 👏🏽
Grateful to be part of such a meaningful event!
What do relationships have to do with students’ oral language development? More than we may realize!
Strong literacy development begins with connection, conversation, and creating spaces where students feel comfortable using their voices. Take a listen!
It’s been YEARS since I’ve created a bulletin board! 😂📌
I’m almost finished, but I couldn’t wait to share the progress. I may be a little rusty, but I think it’s coming together!
Teacher friends, what do you think? 👀
Can we talk about childhood literacy trauma experiences and how it shows up in adults?

Just a little excited about these three new book releases… that’s all! 📚🙌🏽
I can’t wait to dive into each one, learn from these incredible authors, and add even more ideas to my educator toolbox. There’s nothing like a fresh stack of books to get me inspired.
Congratulations to Tiana Silvas, Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz , and Colleen Cruz on your new releases! I’m looking forward to reading, learning, and sharing.
What new education book is at the top of your reading list?
Ok it’s storytime…
She is headed to teach in Dominican Republic! 🇩🇴 Meet ayniah_34 , my CAU former student. Throughout the program, I had the honor of being her professor and eventually her mentor. In college, there is a chance that you would only encounter a professor one time throughout your matriculation. Ms. Payne and I connected immediately. I was not her advisor, yet she would appear faithfully during office hours.
This is a lesson that relationships are the vehicle to improve student outcomes. Because of our relationship, she felt safe and asked for my advice often. She was worried about being trapped in education and falling out of love with it, and I encourage her to explore all options when it comes to education. I pointed her to Aeriale Johnson and her love for student connections and her adventures in Alaska. I pointed her to Gary R. Gray Jr. and his priceless experiences teaching abroad. I shared with her the brilliance of Gholdy Muhammad and her passion to write curriculum that speaks to the heart of humans. There are so many more, but above all I realized how blessed I am to have some really amazing educators in my circle.
This.is.my.why.
I have the audacity to hope and believe that the next generation of teachers can and will positively impact the landscape of education.
S/n and yes she insisted I do a photoshoot at the end🤣
I had the pleasure of joining TCTELA President-Elect Markisha Tisby for a thoughtful conversation about literacy, student-centered instruction, and the work of supporting both educators and students.
I’m always grateful for opportunities to connect with literacy leaders who are passionate about strengthening teaching and learning.
Now I want to hear from you! 🎙️
