Established by the Morehouse School of Medicine in 1984 in Atlanta, SPCC Atlanta AHEC is a member of the statewide Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) network, located at the Georgia Health Sciences University.

SPCC Atlanta AHECS Ga AHEC Scholars FY26 Orientation and Kick-Off. The program was held at Clayton State University (CSU) Harry S. Downs College of Health Professions. Ji’Keria Basley, Continuing Education Coordinator led the program, having recruited the largest class, 29 students in Cohort 8. This year’s program boasts collaborations with diverse disciplines and several institutions, such as Clayton State’s Nursing and Dental Hygeine programs, Ga State’s MPH Program, Mercer University’s MPH Program, Morehouse School of Medicine’s Medical and MPH Programs, and South College’s PA and Nursing programs. Both students and faculty will engage in a two year interprofessional education (IPE) program providing didactic learning and community experientials in IPE, Social Determinants of Health, Cultural Diversity, Behavioral Health, Emerging Health Topics, Practice Transformation, Telehealth and Connecting Communities. Scholars will receive certification in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and Community Health Worker. Cohort 7, with 9 scholars is the graduating class this year. The date for the ceremony is tentatively scheduled for the month of April. A BIG THANK YOU to Dr. Michael Scott, Dean of College of Health Professions at CSU for hosting the Orientations & Kick-Off Event, and Dr. Victoria Foster (CSU), as she serves as Lead Faculty for the AHEC Scholars Program. Thank you to all of the faculty who join our efforts in promoting interprofessional education. Lastly, thank you to the Committed and driven AHEC Team for your invaluable efforts towards the success of this year’s event. Looking forward to an engaging and successful year!

Come join SPCC Atlanta AHEC on Saturday, November 22nd at Clayton State University to explore Careers in Dentistry. We are hosting a Pathway to Smiles Program that will provide both middle and high school students the opportunity to learn of various dental careers, participate in hands on activities, and be led on a tour of the Dental Lab at the university. Refreshments will be provided. This program is held in partnership with Clayton State Dental Hygiene Program, Ga Dental Education Institute (GDEI), Dekalb High School of Technology North, and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). Last week SPCC Atlanta AHEC accepted an invitation to participate in a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Panel Discussion held at South College in Atlanta, Ga. The purpose of the discussion was to bring awareness to DEI at South College. The 4 Panelists included Felicia Slaton, PA Faculty, Eunice Goetz, PA, Dr. Lauren Reid, and Lt. Nicholas Gilmore. Other Faculty and Health Professional students from South College participated in the discussion, as well as SPCC Atlanta AHEC Executive Director, Daphne Byrd, Shanetria Pierson, and LaRonia Burnett.

Congratulations to Dr. Victoria Foster and others for being inducted into the 2024 Georgia Nursing Hall of Fame. Dr. Foster is Professor of Nursing and Director of Undergraduate Nursing at Clayton State University (CSU).
