The Meaning of Life

“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment” (Matthew 6:25, KJV)?

This scripture asks us: “Is life not more than meat?” I believe we are asked this question to make us think about the importance and meaning of life. The scriptures go on to remind us that our Heavenly Father is aware of even the sparrow that falls and that our confidence should be placed in God’s hands.

We, as Christians, realize that the meaning of life is to do the will of the Father. We are created on purpose and for a purpose, and that purpose is to allow Jesus to rule in our lives. We are to be His instruments to not only grow in grace and knowledge, but to point others to Him. If one were to live to be 150 years old, but miss the purpose for which he was created, he would have lived but missed the meaning of life.

In Matthew 6:25, God shifts our attention on life and away from what we eat, what we wear, and the things of the natural, so we can focus on the things of the spiritual. I find in my own life that it is easy to allow the things of the natural to overshadow God’s will in my life. This raises a question: Do we understand the meaning of life, and are we keeping the main thing the main thing?

A Mighty Instrument - Prayer

“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward” (Matthew 6:5, NKJV).

We all know prayer is one of the most important things we can do. It is prayer that moves mountains. Prayer produces faith that moves us from where we are to where God has called us to be. It is the commitment to pray and the action of prayer that continually changes us into the person that God created us to be.

There is a constant pressure to perform. This is not all bad, but when performance takes the place of prayer and seeking God’s will, we operate from a natural standpoint. The natural cannot touch the spiritual. Only when we allow the spiritual to touch the natural can we accomplish eternal, life-changing results. 1 John 5:14 (NKJV) states, “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” When we pray according to His will, He hears us. What a great confidence it is to know that the One who created us and cares about us hears us and can do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we could ask or think.

Are we committed to a life of prayer? Only through a life of prayer can we understand God’s direction for our life. Prayer is not a tool for getting our own way, but for understanding and finding God’s will. Are you tired of doing it on your own? Do you need help and guidance in your life? Make prayer a priority and listen as God speaks to you.
