The Seniors finished up their (last!) Fall semester in radiation biology 🧬 ☢️ with movie reviews! They chose a movie that depicts biological effects of ionizing radiation exposure, and critiqued the depiction based on what they’ve learned over the semester. The verdicts are in!
Radioactive: Taylor and Ashley – ✅ True! Accurate depiction of acute and long-term effects of ionizing radiation exposure from radium and polonium. Additional commentary: As Ashley said, regarding Curie’s scientific accomplishments, “Marie Curie was THAT girl.” 🧪☢️
Oppenheimer: Lori, Camryn and Isabella - ✅ Mostly true! While the movie focused primarily on Manhattan Project development, the brief way in which the biological effects were discussed was accurate. Based on the types of ionizing radiation emitted by the detonation on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, expected effects were described. Additional commentary: The movie focus too much on his love life. “Oppenheimer was a player. “ 😅
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire: Sarah and Elana - ❌False! Godzilla grew stronger post repeated whole body exposure to ionizing radiation. No negative effects were depicted in the titans nor the human population that was exposed. Additional commentary: Radiation hormesis propaganda! 🤣
