At just 18 months old, Heather lost her hearing due to an ear infection. In 1995, she became the first person who is deaf to win Miss America. After her pageantry years, Heather became a strong activist for the deaf community and was appointed to the National Council on Disability and served on the Helen Keller Foundation for Research and Education.
