It commemorates the Hijrah, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, which marks the start of the Islamic calendar. Read below for the full statement in response to the recent actions by the Department of Defense.
"Interfaith Atlanta is deeply concerned by the U.S. Department of Defense's recent decision to reduce its list of officially recognized religious affiliations from over 200 to 30. When faith communities are officially recognized, service members can access chaplains, observe holy days, and practice their traditions without having to choose between their beliefs and their duty. Narrowing official recognition sends a troubling message that only certain faith traditions, and certain military service members, are worthy of value and respect. All who serve our country deserve to be understood and accepted regardless of their religious beliefs. We hope this moment can serve as a reminder to all of us of the importance of interfaith dialogue and relationships. We commit ourselves to continuing to work within Atlanta to foster shared understanding, cooperation, and peace."
