Media Release: SCLC Mourns the Death of Civil Rights "Shero" Dr. Amelia Boynton-Robinson
August 25, 2015 (Atlanta, GA) - Dr. Charles Steele, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) mourn the passing of Dr. Amelia Boynton Robinson. SCLC is blessed to have worked with her in the struggle for justice and equality, highlighted by her pioneering work on the Selma to Montgomery march.
“Dr. Boynton was the straw that stirred the drink. She was a major catalyst in the Selma to the Montgomery march”, says Steele, SCLC President & CEO. “She helped start and more importantly, bring attention to ‘Bloody Sunday’ and her strength, courage and tenacity helped make Selma the historical icon that we know today. Dr. Boynton was to Selma --- what Rosa Parks was to Montgomery”.
The 104 year-old civil rights activist, who nearly died while helping lead the "Bloody Sunday" civil rights march in 1965, championed voting rights and was the first African-American woman to run for Congress in Alabama.
Topped off a great week of reporting---from my revealing Newsmakers Live interview with DeKalb DA Robert James, "I am scared of our growing gang problem", to what Bill Clinton calls "the lions of The Civil Rights Movement" talking about how the original Paschals Restaurant was the political headquarters and "information highway" for the Black community -- to an exclusive interview with rapper T.I. following his performance at the Hawks home opener last night who told me his show is just the beginning of his work to "reconnect the Hawks with the community" in a manner that rekindles "the golden Dominique Wilkins era." I love my work and have met some amazing people along the way.
Steen Miles...Let's see who is paying attention. Every single one of you are on my friends list, as a result of a conscious decision. I wanted you there!! I am not only glad to count you as friends, but also as family. Let's see who on my friends' list actually pays attention. Paste this as your status. I'll be watching to see who really ......is.
