๐Ÿ“šโœจ This program year, SEM Link was selected as one of the community partners for the The Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. (JJATL) Dr. Miriam Chivers Shropshire Youth Ambassador Program!

We welcomed five teens from the chapter to volunteer with us. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ In addition to volunteering, the teens wanted to give back to their community. This spring, they hosted a โ€œSeeing Ourselves in STEMโ€ Book Drive to donate books to a class of students at a Fulton County middle school.

We intentionally selected Bunnie Hilliard , a Black owned bookstore owned by a Jack and Jill mom from another Metro Atlanta chapter, and curated a culturally relevant STEM book list for middle school students. ๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ’™ The teens and their families purchased books and encouraged other teens in the chapter to purchase from the list as well.

Yesterday, chapter mom Erica Dunbar and our Founder and Executive Director Ms. Tokiwa Smith went to the bookstore to pick up the books from the drive. We plan to present the school with the books for the students in August, when school resumes. ๐ŸŽ’

We are so thankful for the amazing community partnership that we have with Jack and Jill Atlanta. ๐Ÿ’— Through this partnership, we are able to โ€œunveil potential through exposureโ€ through our STEM Literacy Program and get books into the hands of Metro Atlanta youth.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Weโ€™re looking ahead to our 2026-27 program year, which kicks off in August! For us to โ€œunveil potential through exposureโ€ for Metro Atlanta youth, we need the STEM community to volunteer with us. ๐Ÿ’œ

Volunteering is a great way to share your passion and expertise in STEM with youth and to serve as a positive adult role model. โœจ Even one encounter with a STEM professional can change the trajectory of a young personโ€™s life.

Our volunteer opportunities are flexible, with some taking place during the school day, others during out-of-school time, and others on weekends. ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ

Your time and knowledge can give a young person confidence in their ability to do STEM and a vision of what is possible for their future. ๐ŸŒŸ

In this photo from the early days of our programs, our Founder and Executive Director, Ms. Tokiwa T. Smith, is engaging a group of middle school girls in a hands-on chemistry activity at an out-of-school time program. ๐Ÿ”ฌ When she started the org in 2005, she had two main goals: to expose youth to different STEM disciplines and career pathways through hands-on activities, and to provide them with positive adult role models in STEM.

Youth become what they see, so as more young people get to connect with the STEM community, they gain a vision of what is possible for them. These two goals have driven our work for the past 20 years, and SEM Link has now served more than 20,000 youth. ๐Ÿงช

SEM Linkโ€™s vision of โ€œunveiling potential through exposureโ€ is too big for Ms. Smith and the orgโ€™s board and staff to accomplish alone. On this final day of our $20K for 20 Years fundraising campaign, we ask that you invest in our work. ๐Ÿ’œ Give at a level that matches your capacity, whether that is $20, $200, $2,000, or any multiple of $20 in between. ๐Ÿ’ต Every gift provides the resources we need to support our work and prepare for our upcoming program year, which will continue to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals.

๐ŸŽ‰ We have officially wrapped up our 20th year of programming! ๐Ÿ”ฌโš—๏ธ

We are celebrating another year of โ€œunveiling potential through exposureโ€ for youth while preparing for the upcoming fiscal year. We are reflecting on 20 years of engaging youth in hands-on STEM activities, exposing them to STEM career pathways, developing their STEM literacy and communication skills, and encouraging their participation in STEM research, all while providing them with positive adult role models in STEM. ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿ”ญ๐Ÿ“š

We have done this work by supporting our schools, participating in community events, donating culturally relevant STEM books to community spaces, reading STEM books to early learners, judging STEM competitions, and hosting our own events. ๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿ’ปโž—

๐Ÿ’ฐ We are in the final days of our $20K for 20 Years fundraising campaign, which ends this Friday, June 12. ๐Ÿ’ต Give at the level of your capacity, whether that is $20, $200, $2,000, or any multiple of $20 in between. ๐Ÿ’œ Every gift provides the resources we need to sustain this work and prepare for our upcoming program year as we continue to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals. ๐Ÿš€

Do not wait. Make your gift today, and help us honor 20 years of impact by sharing this post and spreading the word about our campaign before time runs out. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŒŠ Today, June 8, is World Oceans Day! ๐ŸŒŠ

The ocean produces over half of the worldโ€™s oxygen, regulates our climate, and feeds billions of people. ๐ŸŸ Its ecosystems support an extraordinary diversity of life and sustain the planet we all share. ๐ŸŒ

Protecting and studying the ocean depends on STEM professionals: marine biologists, oceanographers, environmental engineers, marine chemists, and conservation specialists. ๐Ÿ”ฌ The next generation will inherit the challenges of pollution, overfishing, and a warming climate, and they will need both the knowledge and the passion to solve them. ๐Ÿ’™

When young people see themselves as future ocean scientists and stewards, they gain the confidence to build a more sustainable future for our planet. โœจ

Today we wrapped up our 2025-26 program year with a Technology Workshop for Teens on Mobile App Development! ๐Ÿ“ฑโœจ

This event was part of our STEM at the Library program, our strongest community partnership, hosted at the system. A huge thank you to Mrs. Katrina Watson, Branch Manager of the Gladys S. Dennard Library for making it possible to bring STEM experiences to youth in the community.

The public library is such a great community space, which is why we love having our program there.

We will be back in August to "unveil potential through exposure" at the library

One encounter can change the trajectory of a teenโ€™s life. ๐Ÿ”ฌ

We have seen it happen. At one of our career fairs, a middle school student met an engineer and the two worked through a hands-on STEM activity. That experience showed him he could be an engineer, and he went on to major in engineering in college.

For 20 years, we have been unveiling potential through exposure for teens. We send STEM professionals into classrooms and partner with out-of-school-time programs to bring STEM into their programming. We also host signature events like our Teen Science Cafรฉ, Engineering Design Challenge, and Tech Workshop for Teens, plus our STEM Journal Club cohorts that teach teens the skills to prepare for college and careers in STEM. ๐Ÿงชโš™๏ธ

As we wrap up our 20th year, we need your support to keep this work going. ๐Ÿ’ฐ Invest in our $20K for 20 Years campaign before it closes next Friday, June 12th. Give generously at a level that fits your capacity, whether that is $20, $200, $2,000, or any multiple of $20 in between. ๐Ÿ’ต Every gift helps us reach more teens and inspire the next generation of STEM professionals.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Know a teen ready to build something amazing? Bring them out to our Teens for Technology workshop on Saturday, June 6th from 11:00 AMโ€“1:00 PM! Teens ages 13โ€“18 will learn how to use AI tools to design and build their very own mobile apps.

No prior coding experience needed! Teens will create their app from the ground up and walk away with a functioning prototype they can keep developing long after the workshop.

This is a powerful opportunity for teens to build confidence and step into the role of technology creators, not just consumers. And itโ€™s one of todayโ€™s most in-demand skills! ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿ’ป

Out-of-school-time STEM programs give youth exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math in settings that complement what they experience in the classroom, allowing them to explore concepts in fresh and engaging ways. These programs help youth build curiosity, confidence, and critical thinking skills through hands-on, fun learning experiences. They also connect youth with STEM professionals who serve as role models and bring STEM to life beyond the textbook. ๐Ÿ”ฌโœจ

In our 20 years of operation, SEM Link has delivered out-of-school-time programming that gives youth the chance to engage in hands-on STEM activities, explore STEM careers, and connect with the STEM community. And the benefits go both ways! It also gives STEM professionals who are passionate about outreach a chance to share their expertise with youth outside of their workday.
