This weekend, I had the opportunity to reconnect with a long-time friend over dinner. Our conversation drifted toward some of the recent developments on the school board, and it left me reflecting deeply on the lessons I’ve learned through my role as a school board member.
One of the most powerful takeaways I’ve discovered is the strength of silence in moments of uncertainty. I know, it sounds counterintuitive, but there are critical times when silence is the best approach. Here’s why:
When you don’t know the full story: It's easy to jump to conclusions when emotions run high, but sometimes we're not ready to hear the full truth. Our opinions or assumptions might cloud our ability to process a situation fully. Taking a step back and giving ourselves space to reflect can help us avoid misunderstandings and approach tough conversations with an open mind and a clearer heart.
When someone else is sharing their perspective: This one is tough for me, especially when that perspective feels hurtful or confrontational. Bullying and disrespect are hard for anyone to tolerate, and it’s so tempting to fire back in the heat of the moment. But, reacting right away often escalates the situation. I'm learning that silence can offer a chance to reflect and respond with intention instead of anger. It's not easy—it’s a constant work in progress—but it’s a path toward resolving conflicts with grace.
I’m sharing this because I believe we can all benefit from these reminders. It's easy to jump in with opinions, but silence, reflection, and mindful responses can prevent unnecessary conflicts and misunderstandings. Listening and observing before reacting helps us see the bigger picture, especially when the stakes are high.
Let’s commit to more thoughtful pauses and conversations in our community. When we listen more and speak with purpose, we can create real change—for our schools, our youth, and each other.
What’s one moment where you found the power of silence to be impactful? Let’s discuss!

As a parent, hearing about the tragedy at Apalachee High School leaves me heartbroken and deeply concerned. I can't help but to think about how crucial it is for us to take these warning signs seriously when it comes to our children's safety and the safety of their peers. It’s mind-boggling that a father could gift his son an AR-style rifle, especially after being questioned about online threats to commit a school shooting.
How can we, as parents, better protect our children and ensure they are making responsible decisions? What steps should we take when red flags like these arise? Our kids are the future, and it's on us to ensure they’re growing up in environments where they feel safe and supported, not empowered to harm others.
Let’s open up a conversation. What are your thoughts on responsible gun ownership in homes with teens? How can we better advocate for safety measures in our schools and communities? I’d love to hear your experiences and ideas. We owe it to our kids to get this right.
Let’s keep the conversation respectful and focused on solutions.
