A long-neglected architectural landmark in downtown Atlanta is set for a transformation. Dubbed The Pitch, this initiative is a cleanup and activation project led by developers and Invest Atlanta officials to breathe new life into the long-vacant Atlanta Constitution Building at 143 Alabama St.

Invest Atlanta has proposed a grant of up to $3.5 million from the Westside Tax Allocation District Ascension Fund to jumpstart the rehabilitation of the 1940s structure. Once restored, the building will feature 46 affordable housing units and 11,600 square feet of ground-floor commercial space at the intersection of Alabama and Forsyth streets. The total redevelopment cost is projected at $35.2 million.

The project will be executed in two phases. First, The Pitch will launch as a temporary activation beginning in May, stabilizing and cleaning up the historic structure while creating a dynamic public space in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Plans for this phase include cultural events, art activations, digital signage, and pop-up amenities such as food trucks, a DJ booth, a children’s play area, and a pavilion.

Following the World Cup, phase two will begin in August 2026, converting the former newspaper building into affordable housing with community-focused amenities like a computer center, shared gathering spaces, and an outdoor courtyard. Apartment options will range from one- to three-bedroom units, with some one-bedroom rentals starting as low as $518 per month. The redevelopment is expected to be completed by February 2028.
