Listen closely during Atlanta Ballet’s Frida and you might hear something unexpected in the orchestra: a bicycle wheel.
Composer Peter Salem’s score brings Frida Kahlo’s world to life with rich, layered sound, including unconventional instruments that add texture, surprise, and imagination to the production.
Atlanta Ballet percussionist Scott Douglas brings this unique sound to life, alternating with John Lawless throughout the run of the show.
It’s one of those details you may not notice at first, but once you know, you’ll be listening for it.

A closer look at the larger-than-life world of the male Fridas.
In Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Frida, every thread, accessory, and silhouette tells part of Frida Kahlo’s story. For Company dancers Santiago Bedoya, Jordan Leeper, and Guilherme Maciel, stepping into the iconic Tehuana skirts and intricate headpieces is both an artistic transformation and an athletic challenge.
From costumes inspired by Kahlo’s paintings to the power, movement, and cultural reflection behind each role, the male Fridas bring a bold and unforgettable presence to the stage.
