Common Good Atlanta provides incarcerated people and formerly incarcerated people with broad, democratic access to higher education so they can develop a better understanding of both themselves and the societal forces at work around them.
We are incredibly proud to share that this powerful story from our very own Janine Battista .
Janine’s journey is a testament to what’s possible when education, opportunity, and support meet determination. After incarceration, she rebuilt her life—and today, she is a leader, advocate, and living example of the impact reentry education can have.

What does it mean to advance the common good?
At Common Good Atlanta, we believe it happens when people are seen, dignity is affirmed, and access to education is expanded — especially for those who have been excluded from it.
Right now, you can help move this work forward. Thanks to a generous supporter, every gift is matched dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000 through December 31, doubling your impact for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students.
When everyone has the chance to learn, grow, and contribute, society is stronger.

We’re in the final stretch of our year-end matching campaign—and we’re so close. 💚
Thanks to this community, we’ve raised $43,000 toward our $50,000 goal, unlocking $86,000 for students so far. With 15 days left, just $7,000 remains to unlock the full $100,000 match.
Right now, every gift is doubled:
💚 $50 becomes $100
💚 $250 becomes $500
Your support helps make college-level courses possible—from a U.S. history class on the Declaration of Independence, to Constructions of Self: Memory, Life Writing, and Photography, to a Creative Writing Poetry Workshop—spaces where learning sparks reflection, dialogue, and connection.
As one student shared:
“Poetry has helped me find a voice. But somehow I have found the voices of others.”
Education breaks cycles and strengthens communities—and right now, your impact goes twice as far.

Georgia’s FY 2025 corrections budget is nearly $1.5 billion —
but only $172,000 was added for new education opportunities inside.
That’s only 0.01%.
And yet, education is one of the only investments proven to change outcomes for individuals, families, and communities.
That’s why our $50,000 matching gift matters so much.
We’re working to turn $50,000 into $100,000 by December 31 to keep classrooms open, strengthen alumni support, and expand opportunities for learning and belonging.
Every gift — in any amount — makes a statement:
📚 Education is not an afterthought
📖 Everyone deserves access to learning
💚 Opportunity shouldn’t depend on a budget line
If you believe this too, we’d love to have you with us.
