We have completed the build of this 255 cubic-inch blown Ford Flathead, and the engine is now ready for its next stage.

The build includes Iskenderian valve springs, adjustable French valve lifters, an Offenhauser timing cover, new water pumps, custom serpentine pulleys and a block-mounted serpentine belt tensioner. I also fabricated custom finned covers and blocked off the unused openings for a clean, finished appearance.

The engine is fitted with Edelbrock 115 heads, Fel-Pro head gaskets with copper spray, new head studs with heavy washers and genuine acorn nuts, aluminum thermostat outlets, a Roadrunner Engineering manifold, and a Weiand 142 blower. The complete rebuilt 3-speed gearbox has also been mounted behind the engine.

The blower setup has a history going back to 2006, when we purchased the original kit from Roadrunner Engineering after visiting Joe Abbin in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was originally configured for a 1942–47 Flathead with two belts. After purchasing the setup back from the customer in 2012, we later converted it to the 1948–54 single-serpentine-belt configuration with technical support from Joe Abbin. Custom aluminum pulleys were also made for the blower and Denso alternator.

The engine has been prepared for full-flow oil filtration, with a custom ribbed filter bracket, braided-steel oil lines and a custom braided-steel dipstick.

For ignition, we installed an e-FIRE electronic 8BA distributor with high-performance braided plug wires. The ignition and wiring were repositioned to provide better clearance around the serpentine system and a cleaner, more symmetrical installation.

The first version of this blower setup was run on a 239 CI Flathead and produced 186 HP on the dyno. With this completely rebuilt 255 CI combination, we’re expecting considerably more performance.

The engine was initially assembled with twin Stromberg 97 carburetors, but the final configuration can still accommodate a 4-barrel carburetor in the 500–650 CFM range while keeping the overall setup as low-profile as possible.

Most importantly, the engine sounds exactly the way a blown Flathead should deep, sharp, aggressive and unmistakably vintage hot-rod. It has a strong, purposeful exhaust note and the blower gives it an unmistakable character when it comes on.
