This comes up in session with my midlife adults all the time. The Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study is a massive longitudinal research project launched in 1995 and continuing on for decades to investigate health and well-being across the adult lifespan. Findings have deepened our understanding of midlife as a period not only of stress and challenge but also of growth, adaptation, and opportunity. Life satisfaction dips in midlife and rises again in older adulthood, often referred to as the “u curve.” (Blanchflower & Oswald, 2008). This midlife low point has been linked to cumulative stressors (career demands, caregiving, financial pressures, loss), but also to a phase of reassessment and realignment of values and goals.

In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), life is often seen as ever-changing, unpredictable, and sometimes turbulent. Instead of struggling against the current of life or trying to control it, ACT encourages us to step into the flow with openness and curiosity. Through acceptance, we allow our thoughts and feelings to come and go without getting swept away by them. Through commitment to our values, we steer our actions with intention, even when our experiences are rough. In this way, ACT helps us move with the flow of life, rather than against it—finding freedom, presence, and purpose in the journey.

I visited the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the last few weeks to provide a training for a residential adolescent program.
It is definitely that time of year when the leaves look tired of being green and are ready for a change 😊🍁🍂.
The training is fun. The focus on adolescence is a well known, thought provoking challenge. And, again, working with the team is a joy.
