A scene from BAMAKO CHIC featured during Sabar Rek Atlanta’s Supper & Sabar late-night family and community activation. Grateful to producers Maureen Gosling and Maxine Downs, PhD, for allowing us to premiere their work here in Atlanta.

The film had its world premiere at the International Women’s Conference in Kigali, Rwanda and played at the Pan-African Film Festival in Los Angeles.

In the 1960’s a group of self-empowered Malian women sparked a revolution, inspired by beauty and economic survival.

Tonight at Supper & Sabar: Documentary Screening-BAMAKO CHIC
In the 1960s, a group of self-empowered Malian women sparked an evolution, inspired by beauty – and economic survival. They transformed the cloth dyeing tradition using colorful powdered dyes and unbridled creative design. BAMAKO CHIC celebrates African women, whose ingenuity became a force for alleviating poverty and affirming West African cultural identity
