Small town atmosphere and a chance for more personalized instruction appeals to a lot of students. The Trinity Valley Community College Ag Club attended the Texas Junior College Agriculture Association Convention held at Sam Houston State University this past Thursday and Friday. There were five TVCC students who attended. Our club president, Isabella Lucio, served as State Reporter and she and Shiloh Sartain brought home the first place award for the scrap book contest. I’m in the process of having the scrapbook scanned by our graphic and print design department and will post the link to it later. We went on tours of the Texas prison museum, and the Sam Houston museum while we were in Huntsville.

The TVCC wildlife conservation & management class toured the TPWD Freshwater Fishery Center today. It is located just outside of Athens, Texas. Donovan Patterson, who is over the freshwater breeding program at the center, gave us a wonderful tour of the breeding and rearing area in which they were in the middle of the breeding season. It was a wonderful tour and we learned a lot. Students also had a few minutes to go through the self-guided tour area of the center before returning to campus.

The wildlife conservation and management class had a guest speaker today. Heidi Kryger-Bailey, Wildlife Biologist, for the Texas Parks and Wildlife department gave us an outstanding presentation on what she does for a living, her educational background, and how she obtained the current position. She also brought many tanned animal skins/furs she passed around and asked our students to identify them. Her region includes Henderson County, Anderson County, Van Zandt County and Rains County.

The wildlife conservation and management class enjoyed a guest presentation today from Texas A&M Agrilife Extension pond specialist, Tyson Keese. Also contributing to the presentation was Henderson County Extension agent Spencer SIms. Both also shared their career paths and education with our students at the end of the presentation. Spencer was the captain on our beef cattle show team in 2000-2001. We very much appreciate both of them taking the time to spend with us today!
