In September 2016, Charles Bradley, often called “The Screaming Eagle of Soul,” delivered a searing rendition of “Changes” on the Toronto Star’s Newsroom Concert Series. The track, originally released on Black Sabbath’s Vol. 4 (1972), is a sorrowful meditation on loss. But in Bradley’s hands, it becomes something far deeper: a ritual of mourning, love, and transformation. Earlier that year, Bradley had included the track on his breakout album—also titled Changes. He recorded it while caring for his dying mother. In interviews, he said he initially resisted the song because it struck too close to home. But after watching her take her final breath, the lyrics took hold of him. “Even today when I sing that song,” he said, “I get truly emotional.” That emotional current is palpable in this stripped-down live performance. Bradley doesn’t just sing the song—he embodies it. This isn’t typical psychedelic fare. But what Bradley channels here is deeply psychedelic in essence: not through sound, but through spirit. Psychedelia isn’t only about altered perception—it’s about radical emotional honesty, the cracking open of identity, the transmutation of pain into presence.
