As the disciples prepared for ministry, Jesus told them they must deny themselves. Deny is translated from a strengthened form of a Greek verb. It signifies that the command given is weighty. It exceeds a simple disregard for personal needs. Deny, aparneomai, means to "detach utterly."
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." Matthew 16:24
As we detach utterly from personal need, we turn to the Savior and attach boldly! We must exchange detachment from need with attachment to Christ to avoid a dangerous void. As we entrust needs to Jesus, we renew our wearied minds, comfort wounded hearts, and soothe the depth of emotional pain.
