Update - Lumi is safe and sound in a foster home!

Update! Lumi is in a foster home! We have received close to 100+ foster applications for Lumi and many more phone inquiries! Thank you for your patience as we work through all of your emails and calls! Some of you have asked why Lumi needs to go to a home with older children or have no children in the home. It is important to us that pets are a good fit and fun experience for everyone in the family and that the pet is set up for success. As a rowdy, young and large dog (80lbs+) who loves to romp and jump, Lumi could unintentionally hurt a younger and smaller child. While we know he will thrive with training, we want to place him where he can succeed from the start. Thank you to everyone who has shared, comments and helped network this pup! We are amazed by and appreciate the outpouring of support!

Lumi needs to get out of the shelter ASAP – we rarely make “URGENT” types of posts, but in this case, Lumi needs it.

Lumi is not doing well here and is in a profound state of stress when in his kennel, and keeping him here is no longer humane. The mental health of the animals in our care is critical, and Lumi is suffering. We need your likes, shares, word of mouth and networking help to find an adopter, or foster who can hang onto him until he gets adopted.

Lumi arrived here when his previous family lost their home and had to make the difficult decision to bring him here but his previous family reports that Lumi is a total love. He snuggles, he cuddles, he wants to sit in your lap and is housetrained. In the shelter he barks and only settles with a few of his favorite staff members in an office, and even then, he is on alert. Unfortunately, no matter how hard we try here, the shelter is not a home, and Lumi has so much pent up energy and stress, he struggles to enjoy walks or yard time.

We try to give Lumi a variety of outlets and activities to help him feel better, none of them are a replacement for a loving home. Lumi needs placement IMMEDIATELY either through a foster or ideally, an adopter. Lumi does well with neighborhood dogs, but is pretty overwhelming to other dogs in the household, so we recommend he be the only dog in the home. Lumi is a young, rowdy boy so if there are kids in the home, they should be 10+ years old.

Friends of Loudoun County Animal Services has sponsored his adoption fee, provided him with a scholarship for training classes and donated all the supplies to get him started in a new home, so now we just need a loving place for him to go. Are you Lumi’s person? Come meet him today, we are open 11am-6pm.

As some may have seen circulating around the news, there is indeed a canine respiratory illness slowly spreading throughout the country. While it may be alarming, this is not a time to panic. Regardless, it is important to be aware and take precautions when possible.

If you are concerned about the potential risk of exposing your dog to illness, we suggest avoiding dog parks and other areas that are unfamiliar. At Stream Valley, we are committed to using proper safety and sanitization techniques to ensure that your pets remain healthy.

As of today, this illness has not yet been reported in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. Many respiratory illnesses that have been confirmed are influenza, Bordetella, and kennel cough. We will be sure to share an update once more information becomes available.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. Your pet's health is our priority!

As you prepare for Thanksgiving, don't forget to consider your pets' safety around the holiday feast. If you want to include them in the celebrations, some safe options are carrots, apples, green beans, and pumpkin puree. Make sure these foods are free of sugars, spices, and added seasonings and given in moderation.

On the other hand, common Thanksgiving foods can be harmful to pets, including turkey bones, fatty foods, onions, and chocolate. These can upset their stomachs or even be toxic. It's also a good idea to let guests know not to feed your pets any table scraps. By taking these precautions, you can ensure a happy and healthy holiday for your furry friends!

Thanksgiving is just days away! Need a refresher on how to keep your pets safe during the holiday? Follow these tips to prevent the many mishaps that can occur. Stay tuned tomorrow to learn which foods you can and can't share during Turkey Day!

We're falling into fun all around SVVH :)

Baker wants everyone to know that he is ready for his forever home by sharing his carefully crafted resume! He has been a very special resident at Stream Valley since March and loved by all. After many months of hard work, he is officially confident in his ability to be the best boy as part of a new family. 'Tis the season of giving, after all! If you or a friend, family member, coworker, or neighbor are interested in adopting this ladies' man, please give us a call at (703) 723-1017. Otherwise, we would greatly appreciate your help to spread the word in hopes of finding his perfect match!

Stream Valley was abuzz with little ones today as we enjoyed visits from our kindergarten friends at Mill Run Elementary School! Veterinary Technician Julia and her precious pup, Scooter, did a great job of demonstrating how health exams work for animals along with sharing a behind the scenes look at our hospital facilities. There's always much to learn at your neighborhood veterinary hospital!

Are you interested in a field trip opportunity for your class, home school group, or scout troop? Give us a call at (703) 723-1017 or send an email to [email protected] and we will work with you to coordinate!

Tiger Lily and Inky arrived at the shelter when their owner had to go into hospice and could no longer care for them. Tiger Lily has settled into life at the shelter, but Inky is still shy and unsure. Despite being scared, Inky has started following Tiger Lily's lead. While she doesn't want to leave the safety of her hidey-box, she now leans in for pets and takes treats so gently from our hands. She looks to Tiger Lily for reassurance, and Tiger Lily is always there to give her kisses and to show her it will all be ok.

Tiger Lily and Inky are bonded and are looking for a home together. They are sweet, love treats and pets and soft, fuzzy blankets. They have lived with other calm cats before and did well. Interested in meeting Inky and Tiger Lily? Stop by the shelter today, we are open 11am-6pm for adoptions.

Storm Trooper the hamster came in for a weigh in at his last visit to SVVH, as he looked a bit thin at his semi-annual health exam in July. It's common for a hamster's weight to fluctuate, but sudden or rapid weight loss can indicate a problem, such as wet tail or kidney inflammation. The average healthy weight for a hamster of Storm Trooper's size is between 120-200 grams. Fortunately for Storm Trooper, he weighed 139 grams! He received a clean bill of health and was a very good boy.

Do you have an exotic or pocket pet who has yet to see a vet? At Stream Valley Vet, we love to see all critters big or small. Schedule their visit by calling (703) 723-1017 and learn more on our website at

The cost of medical expenses will be challenging and extensive throughout this long process. No amount is too small, and every ounce of support will surely be appreciated. If you are unable to contribute at this time, you may also share this post to spread the word. Thank you!

It’s the 17th ! Let's celebrate this milestone of uniting towards a common goal to end rabies now through and how each and every 1 of us has a part to play.

In 2023, over 450,000 dogs have been vaccinated so far. You can help raise that number by keeping your pets up to date on their rabies vaccine and by collaborating with others in your community to raise awareness about preventing the disease. Check out the following infographic to learn about the many faces of rabies control in the U.S. and share it with your fellow pet owners. Together, we can make a difference!

Saturn needs a new foster home by this weekend! He is a sweet, kind boy and is fully house trained and crate trained. He even sleeps through the night. He is curious about cats but backs off quickly when they let him know they aren't interested. He's good with other dogs and children and will be a great hiking buddy for someone! He loves long hikes and playing fetch but then is always ready for snuggle time when back home. Please let us know if you can foster him (email [email protected]) - or better yet, apply to adopt!! Saturn is approximately a year old, 55 pounds, is neutered and up-to-date on vaccines. Apply now!

At Stream Valley, we love our exotic patients! Fluffy, a Netherland Dwarf Rabbit, recently came in for his first semi-annual exotic exam exam. Exotic and pocket pets should receive health exams on a semi-annual basis because they can be more adept at hiding illness. If we have a baseline summary of their health to compare with for future visits, it's much easier to tell when something may be wrong. Fortunately for sweet little Fluffy, he went home with a clean bill of health, but not before receiving lots of love from our team. ❤
