MY DAUGHTER MARRIED A KOREAN MAN WHEN SHE WAS 21. SHE HASN'T COME HOME IN TWELVE YEARS, BUT EVERY YEAR SHE SENDS $80,000. THIS CHRISTMAS, I WENT TO SEE HER WITHOUT WARNING. WHEN I OPENED HER HOUSE DOOR... I FROZE.
Twelve years.
That’s how long it had been since Mary Lou left for South Korea.
Not once had she come home.
But every year, exactly $80,000 arrived.
Everyone said I was lucky.
I didn’t feel lucky.
I’m Theresa, 63 years old.
I raised Mary Lou alone after losing my husband.
She was intelligent, kind, and beautiful.
At 21, she married Kang Jun, a Korean man nearly twenty years older.
I opposed it.
But she was determined.
Soon after the wedding, she moved away.
At the airport, we cried together.
I thought she'd return someday.
She never did.
The money kept arriving.
Always $80,000.
Always the same message:
“Mom, take care of yourself. I’m doing well.”
I worried about that word.
“Well.
Neighbors whispered.
I stayed silent.
During a video call, I noticed her eyes looked distant.
When I asked why she never came home, she answered:
“I’m very busy with work, Mom.”
I stopped asking.
Years passed.
My hair turned gray.
The house improved.
The loneliness remained.
Every Christmas I still set a place for her at the table.
Finally, after twelve years, I bought a plane ticket.
I never told her.
The trip was long and exhausting.
A taxi brought me to the address she had given me.
A quiet neighborhood.
A two-story home.
No one answered the bell.
The gate was unlocked.
I entered.
The garden was neat.
Too quiet.
Inside, the house felt strange.
The living room looked like a showroom.
Perfect.
Lifeless.
No coats.
No shoes.
No scent of people living there.
I called softly.
“Mary?”
Nothing.
The kitchen was spotless.
The refrigerator nearly empty.
Upstairs, I found three rooms.
One bedroom with only a single bed.
A closet filled with women’s clothing.
No men's belongings.
The second room looked rarely used.
No family photos.
Nothing belonging to Kang Jun.
Then I opened the final room.
Boxes filled with cash.
Stacks of dollars.
My hands trembled.
Why was it hidden?
Where did it come from?
Then I heard a door open downstairs.
Footsteps.
A voice called out...
And my heart nearly stopped. Full Story in first comment 👇

I married the boy who had been my closest friend since childhood. But only days before our fifth wedding anniversary, I overheard him say something that made me question our entire relationship.

“She fell for my trap exactly as planned. Soon, everything I’ve been working toward will finally happen.”

Matthew and I had always seemed meant for each other.

Our families lived in neighboring houses. We attended the same preschool, grew up on the same street, and later studied at the same school.

From the beginning, we were almost impossible to separate.

Whenever another child made fun of me, Matthew immediately stepped in to defend me. Before important exams, we spent hours studying together. When prom arrived, he was the person who asked me to be his date.

Everyone around us constantly predicted that we would one day become husband and wife.

Matthew and I always laughed at the idea.

But by the time we reached high school, our friendship had already become something deeper.

After we graduated from college, Matthew knelt in front of me and began asking the question I had secretly hoped to hear for years.

“Will you marry—”

“Yes,” I answered before he could finish.

At that moment, I genuinely believed no woman could have been luckier than me.

Our life together appeared almost perfect.

We married, purchased a home in the same neighborhood where we had grown up, and built the quiet, comfortable future we had always imagined sharing.

As our fifth anniversary approached, I wanted to give Matthew something unforgettable.

Several months earlier, I had noticed him admiring an expensive watch displayed in a shop across town. Without telling him, I began putting money aside until I could finally afford it.

On the day the watch was ready, I told Matthew I was leaving for work.

In reality, I had secretly taken the day off.

After collecting the gift, I drove home with the carefully wrapped box beside me, imagining the surprise and happiness on his face.

I expected Matthew to still be at his office.

But when I reached our driveway, his car was already parked outside.

Confused, I entered the house as quietly as possible.

That was when I heard his voice coming from the living room.

He was talking to someone on the phone.

The instant he mentioned my name, I stopped moving.

At first, I assumed he was planning a surprise for our anniversary. Smiling to myself, I remained hidden near the doorway and listened.

Then Matthew laughed.

“Don’t worry,” he said. “She walked directly into my trap when we were still in high school.”

Every part of my body went cold.

My heart began beating so violently that it became difficult to breathe.

What trap was he talking about?

And why had it begun when we were teenagers?

Before I could make sense of what I had heard, Matthew continued.

“My plan is finally about to succeed. I’ve been preparing for this since we were young.”

The gift bag almost fell from my fingers.

Suddenly, every memory we had created together seemed uncertain.

Our childhood friendship.

Every time he protected me.

The night of our prom.

His proposal.

Our wedding.

Had any of those moments been genuine?

Or had they all been carefully arranged steps in a plan I knew nothing about?

Then Matthew said one final thing.

His words were so disturbing that I turned and fled before he could discover me standing there.

Tears blurred the road as I rushed toward my car.

Only minutes earlier, I had entered our home believing I was about to surprise the man I loved more than anyone.

Instead, I left wondering whether my entire marriage had been built upon manipulation and a secret he had hidden since high school.

It felt as though I had suddenly awakened inside a life that had never truly belonged to me.
