Happy birthday to LeVar Burton! The actor and director is 69 today. He inspired an entire generation to love reading. Take a look, it's in a book! Whether it was Roots, Star Trek: The Next Generation or Ali he is one of the greatest actors in the business. Happy birthday, LeVar!

Trisurfatops just played the open mic at the Squire lounge on Colfax. What a scene. What a blast.
The murals on the wall, one of a hobo clown that used to show all me and all of my mid eighties peer group Tom and Jerry cartoons, from a time where animated violence couldn’t hurt a fly.
The information Jon, on bass, gathered is that there will be a back line. Amps, mics and drums. That the open mic will commence at 8 pm. Perfect. Back before my bedtime.
Jon heads down to Colfax and Williams at 6:30pm, to insure our name is in the open mic list.
Adam, on drums, and I, on guitar, are to arrive after I help put my daughter to bed. She was full of questions tonight about the few story books we read. I had to stay on task a be heading down to the stately Squire at 7:30pm.
Adam drives so I just have to bring my guitar and monumental pedal board.

Jon is watching basketball on the large flatscreen when we come in.
The doorway is in the corner of the room. The ceiling, painted copper plating.
Jon lets us know that they might be starting at 9pm.
Jon loses heart. He has been at this gradually darker and darker bar that, despite its unquestion lime life, felt unpromising in its promise of a back line. We were only seeing amps at this point. No mics and, most discouraging, no drums. At 9pm. Still no drums.
We discuss. Jon’s is questioning if this is worth the trouble. I felt the same, if we ended up in fact, playing a 4 song open mic set at midnight. Adam was fine with calling it. I ask the fellas, “Let’s wait until 10pm.”
I was off the hook for the rest of the night due to my lovely Rachael. So caring and encouraging. . . And not expecting me home until 1am.
Jon and Adam agree to stay.
Soon there after, the drums have arrived. They slowing start to resemble a proper back line. Ready to rock.
I had put our Trisurfatops mantel second from the top of the list, just behind the “house” band.
The stage is set. The house band takes the stage. We’re all defenseless against the volume.
The chords are familiar. The Cure sewn tapestry fills the living bar. “Just like Heaven.”
A good sign.
Soon, we’re up. Jon says, “2 songs”
Mummy Woman and Been here Before. I’m tense with excitement and find calmness as I bring my obtuse wicker pedal board up onto the stage. This cord to the amp. This chord to me. There’s not a clear footstop for the distortion on the 2 cone Fender amp. That’s ok. Adapt.
My super overdrive will ruffle a few feathers but, no harm done.
I palm mute as I find the key for the acapella beginning.
