Tomorrow marks 40 years since the death of Len Bias – a tragedy that stunned the sports world and the legion of fans who followed the young basketball star. It was, without a doubt, one of the most heartbreaking and troubling days in local sports history.

As a reporter, you accept that your work will occasionally make people angry. But on June 19, 1986, less than a year into my TV news career, I seemed to p**s off an entire region by reporting the truth.

NEW: On the eve of an election for a new mayor and council members, DC911 had another major meltdown. Two DC Fire & EMS units handling separate high-priority EMS calls this evening couldn't get anyone to answer the radio for five minutes. One was trying to tell dispatchers they were closest to a confirmed cardiac arrest call. The other was trying to get paramedics to respond to their patient who was having trouble breathing. Link to radio traffic and details is in the first comment.

FROM STATter911: An embarrassing DC911/OUC mix-up yesterday. Help dispatched to free a trapped crash victim just a block from the White House was sent, instead, to Suitland Parkway near the MD border. Eight minutes were lost before DC911 dispatchers figured out their mistake and corrected it.

With OUC history as our guide, despite lives on the line, no one will demand answers and accountability. Someone in charge, please prove me wrong and make this an issue.
