The Humboldt State University (HSU) Human Performance Lab is a research and teaching lab designed to (1) train HSU students and to (2) promote health, wellness, and performance across the lifespan. It serves as a bridge between academic programs in Kinesiology, and research and practice. The Humboldt State University Human Performance Laboratory serves HSU students, faculty, and staff as well as local community members.

At IdeaFest, students in the Exercise is Medicine On Campus (EIM-OC) club showcased their work, demonstrating how student-led initiatives can create real impact.

Supported annually by the CPS Scholars Program, these students promote health and physical activity across campus through initiatives like the weekly Daily 5K.

Their efforts have helped Cal Poly Humboldt earn Gold Level recognition as an EIM-OC campus for four consecutive years.

Thank you, CPS, for empowering student leaders to turn ideas into action.

*Exercise is Medicine® On Campus (EIM-OC) is a global initiative led by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Exercise is Medicine On Campus 💪

Today in our KINS 379 lab, students participated in a comprehensive fitness assessment including body composition (BIA), flexibility, balance, and reaction time.

These types of tests are most meaningful when interpreted against normative data—allowing us to understand where an individual stands relative to established standards.

At Cal Poly Humboldt’s Human Performance Lab, we have been collecting and building this type of data over many years, providing a valuable reference for evaluation and education.

This is where testing becomes insight.
This is where data becomes meaningful.

Thank you, Kellie, for always capturing such meaningful moments in our classes!

These photos are from a Resistance Training Testing Lab in
KINS 379 – Exercise Physiology.

As you can see, students were highly engaged—
actively participating, encouraging one another,
and at the same time approaching the testing process with focus and precision.

Moments like these reflect more than just physical effort—
they show discipline, collaboration, and a commitment to doing things the right way.

Learning the science, applying it in real time,
and supporting each other through the process—

This is what exercise science education looks like in action. 💪

Just shared a short video from our KINS 425 Strength & Conditioning lab exploring jump performance and the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC).

In this session, we look at three key movements:
• Squat Jump (pure concentric force)
• Countermovement Jump (SSC contribution)
• Drop Jump / RSI (reactive ability and timing)

What makes this interesting is not just how high someone jumps, but *how* that performance is produced — whether through force, elastic energy, or rapid force transmission.

This particular case highlights an important concept:
An athlete can demonstrate strong power output, yet still show limitations in reactive strength and SSC efficiency.

That distinction is critical for both performance analysis and program design.

More content like this will be shared as part of ongoing work connecting biomechanics, physiology, and practical training applications.

KINS 379 Exercise Physiology Lab Activity: Astrand Cycle Ergometer Maximal Test 🚴‍♀️

Kinesiology courses consistently include a high proportion of student-athletes each year, and their performance clearly reflects their training background.

In particular, members of the @humboldt.crew have repeatedly demonstrated outstanding performance across semesters. Producing 250–300 watts—levels not commonly seen in the general female population—these results highlight a very high level of conditioning and preparation.

A great example of exercise physiology in action.

As part of the KINS 379 Exercise Physiology lab, we conducted a VO₂max test demonstration—one of the most fundamental assessments in exercise science.

Using our newly acquired COSMED metabolic cart and treadmill, this session focused on demonstrating how maximal oxygen uptake is measured and interpreted. VO₂max represents a core concept in exercise physiology, reflecting the integrated function of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems during maximal effort.

This demonstration provides a critical bridge between theoretical concepts and real-world physiological assessment, helping students better understand how key variables are measured in practice.

We are grateful to @humboldtpolytechnic for supporting our program with state-of-the-art equipment that makes this level of instruction possible.

We are proud to share that our advisor, Dr. Young S. Kwon, has been recognized with the Excellence in Teaching Award and will be delivering a lecture as part of the Cal Poly Humboldt 2025–2026 Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series.

📅 Date: Wednesday, March 25, 2026
🕔 Time: 5:00–7:00 PM
📍 Location: Goodwin Forum, Nelson Hall East, Room 102

🧠 Lecture Title:
"Beyond Facts: Paradigm Shifts in Exercise Biochemistry and Their Implications for Health"

This lecture, inspired by Thomas S. Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, explores how scientific progress is driven not simply by accumulating facts, but by transformative shifts in how we understand the world.

Using exercise biochemistry as a central example, Dr. Kwon will examine how traditional concepts—such as energy metabolism and lactate—have evolved under new scientific frameworks, reshaping both education and health practice.

Rather than viewing past knowledge as “wrong,” this talk emphasizes that rethinking assumptions leads to deeper understanding, better teaching, and more meaningful applications to human health.

Through real-world examples and classroom insights, the lecture highlights how recognizing paradigm shifts fosters critical thinking, scientific curiosity, and lifelong learning.

✨ Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with cutting-edge perspectives in exercise science!

Today in our Resistance Training Lab, students performed a Muscular Power Test — but what makes this experience meaningful goes beyond the numbers.

In KINS 379 – Exercise Physiology, we focus on the concept:
🔹 What is muscular power?
🔹 How is it physiologically produced?
🔹 What energy systems and neuromuscular factors contribute?

In KINS 425 – Strength & Conditioning, we move beyond theory:
🔹 How do we design a valid power test protocol?
🔹 How do we interpret the data?
🔹 How do we apply results to program design?

This is how our curriculum is intentionally mapped:

➡️ Start – Understand the concept (KINS 379)
➡️ Develop – Apply testing methodology (KINS 425)
➡️ Master – Design and implement performance programs (KINS 425)

Curriculum mapping is not accidental. It is structured progression.

Students don’t just learn definitions.
They measure. They analyze. They program. They coach.

Concept → Protocol → Application.

That is how we build mastery.
