As we’re now past Christmas, the New Year is right around the corner. This can be a popular time to reflect on the past year and set some goals for 2025. Here are some tips to make sure you’re able to stick with those goals past January 10th:

1. Know your why
Sticking with a goal takes dedication and persistence. On the hard days, you’ll need to know why this goal is important to you to keep going.

2. Align with your Long-Term Goals
Do you have a vision of where you want to be in 5 or 10 years? Take the time to dream what that blocks like and then set your annual goals to be what’s needed to get you there.

3. Break it down to bite size
Focusing on a big goal can be intimidating. Try to break it down into more manageable steps that you can do each day.

4. Don’t Do it Alone
It’s a lot harder to make zero progress on a goal when you know someone else is going to ask you about it. If you’re married, you should be creating financial goals together with your spouse. If you’re single, find a friend or family member to help hold you accountable.

We all have holiday traditions. They can bring back nostalgic memories, but as time goes on, circumstances change. A tradition that once made sense may now not have the same role. Here are 3 signs it may be time to reevaluate a holiday tradition:

1) Change in Family
Whether it’s a loss in the family, a birth, or adding an in-law, changes in the family structure lead to changes in the family dynamic. It may be helpful to ask, “What works best for our family now?”

2) It Feels like an Obligation
Traditions can have their time and place, but if you’re finding yourself dreading a tradition more than you get excited about it, it may be time to reevaluate it. You and your family may come up with a new tradition that everyone can get excited about.

3) You can’t afford it
There are plenty of costs that add up during the holidays. If you have a tradition like a ski trip or a gift exchange that’s become outside of your budget due to a change in income or financial goals, it’s worth an honest conversation with your family. Chances are someone else may have the same concerns.
Traditions reflect a family’s values. Changing those traditions doesn’t mean the family’s values have changed. It may just mean a new tradition better embodies those values in the new season of life.
