San Bernardino County, in partnership with Family Assistance Program, has been awarded $5.8 million in Homekey Round 3 funding from the California Department of Housing and Community Development to construct 22 interim housing units to serve homeless youth, which may include but is not limited to those who have previously been in foster care or involved with the probation system. 🏠

The project itself will be led by Family Assistance Program, a nonprofit agency that provides housing and supportive services to vulnerable populations in the High Desert region. 🏜️

The Homekey funding will support the expansion of the TAY (Transition-Age Youth) Tiny Home Village in Victorville, which currently serves as a youth drop-in facility and community center in Old Town Victorville. The addition will include 22 interim housing units specifically for young adults between the ages of 18-24. The campus will also offer on-site supportive services, including case management, healthcare navigation, substance use counseling, mental health services, family reunification and workforce development resources. 🏗️

We set these two units up in about 1 1/2 hours each. The outside air temperature had reached 112°F and was 102°F when we shot temperatures; the inside temp with no AC was 100°F; and the exterior siding in full sun was 118°F (warm to the touch but not hot). 30 minutes AC and the inside cooled to about 80°F; 40 min and it was a very comfortable 74°F. These Phoenix Cottages are well insulated!
