Saturday at Pack House Farm:
How exciting to see RAIN this past week! We are still in a significant drought, but at least it has been enough the last two weeks to lift the burn ban.
Won’t complain on the fact it rained on the way to the farm - which meant had to pivot from spreading mulch as planned. Day may not have gone according to plan, but still got a lot done.
Blackberries are starting to bloom. The honeybees were LOVING the flowers - which they’ll do their magic and turn into honey. This year, experimenting on a row by not pruning it. Finished getting out last year’s canes, and I wish yall could see how the bees were working them! First fruit starting to form on the row that wasn’t pruned. Maybe we’ll have a few pints early this year!
It was a good day to scout the field. So.Many.Blueberries!! Things look good and fingers crossed it holds out for a great season. There were some dead branches and shoots, so cut all those out. Nope, I don’t know why they died exactly - but all seemed to have cicada damage near the soil from 2024. Some look like a late frost got them. If there are more dead branches this season, I’ll take it to the NC State Insect and Disease Lab for official diagnosis.
All the cuttings went on the burn pile. Mama Duck is still there and now we have 9 eggs!! I’m not going to burn until they hatch or we find out they were not fertilized… So y’all may have to overlook a massive pile of trees and cuttings this season.
About a month out from showtime, and getting so excited!!

Did you know that farmers - no matter the size of their farm - have to fill out surveys for U.S. Department of Agriculture?

Describe your perfect date: April 25
It really was about the perfect day! Sunshine, good breeze, all equipment working and RAIN!
Some of our bees have never seen rain. Granted the life cycle of a honeybee ain’t that long - but still! We’ve been dry. Very dry. Like a legit drought that’ll take over a foot of rain to get to normal.
Which means the burn pile is still there - and is now home to a mama wood duck and her 6 eggs. So even if it rains, the pile will stay until those babies are gone.
Mount Mulchmore is getting smaller scoop by scoop. 6 more rows done today and almost halfway through mulch season. Got in my workout and over 15k steps.
Blueberries are growing and blackberries blooming.
Getting excited for Pack House Berry Season ‘26!!

Happiness is a little farm.
With two new hives of bees 🐝
Blueberries starting to make fruit. 🫐
Right now all that’s missing for a good season is rain 🌧️….
And time to put out mulch.
Seriously y’all - we need rain.

In the world of blueberries, chillin’ hours bring spring flowers! 🫐 🌺
Working on finishing pruning. Wet weekends, winter weather and Wolfpack basketball have us feeling behind - but Facebook memories says we’re right on schedule. ❄️ 🐺
Some of the earlier varieties are starting to bloom, and buds are forming on all the others. These flowers are what will be this summers berries after the bumblebees and other pollinators work their magic. 🐝 🪄
Nothing gets me more excited about summer than an 80 degree day in March! 🌞
Now… we just don’t need any hard frosts until fall 🤞

Pruning (verb): To trim (a tree, shrub, or bush) by cutting away dead or overgrown branches or stems, especially to increase fruitfulness and growth.
And that’s exactly what’s going on at the farm these days! It’s a lot of work. There’s wrestling branches. There’s a lot of looking twice and cutting once. There’s a whole lot of hoping you make the best decisions and there are berries this summer.
About a third of the way done, and spring is just around the corner! There are signs of “mud season” - and it’s been dry so the rain is welcomed!
On another note - will be starting from scratch with bees this spring. The hive didn’t survive - which happens. Bees do bee things, and hope to have the apiary back in business before the nectar flow begins for honey this season.
Grocery stores and Hallmark movies make it all look too easy.

Watching the College Football Playoffs reminded us of the time in 2021 when we had to coach the berries to ripen and be ready for the picking season. Even though it's January 1st, Summer will be here before you know it! Happy New Year & Go Blueberries!
