Isn’t it funny how when we are deprived of something (summer) for nine months of the year, we initially forget all of the trials and tribulations associated with it?

We will all too soon be plagued by mosquitoes, gnats, and flies when all we want to do is enjoy a bonfire or walk along the beach.

It’s tempting to reach for the classic insect repellant, but before you do that, flip over the bottle to see if DEET is an active ingredient.

DEET is a registered pesticide. It is a member of the toluene chemical family. Toluene is an organic solvent used in rubber, plastic cements, and paint removers. DEET is absorbed through the skin and can pass into the blood.

It can cause allergic skin reactions and eye irritation. A 2013 analysis of about 4,000 DEET-related calls to poison control centers found that 450 people needed medical treatment after applying DEET, and two were fatal.

Most cases of seizures, slurred speech, coma, and other serious side effects have occurred in people who ingested DEET or applied it for three or more days in a row or used products with 95 percent DEET or more.

Ever have someone ask you this question? Maybe you've asked it yourself. If so, GREAT! We LOVE people who think and ask questions so they can make a more informed decision for themselves!! Our cousins tagged us in a facebook discussion asking what makes Young Living unique, i.e., why should someone pay more for a bottle of YL oil when there's LOTS of super cheap oils out there. I thought I'd share my response with you. :)

France exports more lavender than it produces. 🤔 How is that possible unless most of what is mass produced is adulterated with other stuff? 😳 If I'm using an oil for maximum benefit for my family, especially on my babies, I want to make sure it's processed properly and that I get ALL the benefits that that oil is supposed to have with ZERO harmful additives or side effects. You have to know your oil company. Your oil company has to have extensive scientific and chemistry background and know exactly what levels of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, ketones, esters, etc each oil must have and in precisely what amounts. You only get a true therapeutic grade essential oil when it's processed at exactly the right temperature and pressure for exactly the right amount of time, no more, no less, and that your company is not extracting with toxic chemical solvents like hexane (which has no requirement to be listed on the label). Each and every plant has it's own very precise distillation process and your company should have trained chemists/essential oil experts on staff to be testing each and every batch of oils. To do that, they need multi-million dollar GCMS, HPLC, and other very high-level testing systems.

I'll be honest. I noticed some good benefits with cheap store bought oils myself before making the switch. I have also done extensive research on many of the most well-known companies (relatively NEW ones) out there. When I first began my essential oil journey 11 years ago, we didn't have all these oil companies to choose from. There was basically only one front-runner, and after they became wildly successful and essential oils started becoming a household name because of this one company's amazing RESULTS, all these other companies began to jump on the essential oil bandwagon, trying to increase their profit margins and finding ways to mass produce oils cheaper with just enough benefits (or maybe not) and putting together great MARKETING plans.

Was the company you get your oils from primarily an essential oil company right from the start? Have they been in business and growing and distilling their own oils for more than 20 years? Do they compare their oils to another company saying, "Ours are just like X brand only cheaper?" If they're comparing themselves to another company, you have to ask yourself WHY.

When you're buying oils from a company that does not own its own farms and doesn't distill its own oils, then there's really not too many differences in brands. Every company that doesn't own it's own farms and distill its own oils are likely just buying oils from all the same brokers. Buying essential oils from the vast majority of companies out there is like buying gas from a Chevron Station vs Mobil... Same gas, different label. Except with essential oils, individual companies potentially put toxic chemical additives in their oils to water them down to produce them cheaper and increase their profit margins. They also may likely be adding toxic chemical additives to make it smell more like lavender or peppermint because something went wrong somewhere in the distillation process --because the growers, harvesters, distillers, etc aren't properly educated -- so now they have an oil that doesn't smell like the plant it came from and so they have to put in toxic chemical additives after the fact to make you THINK it's pure lavender or peppermint...

AND, there's no regulation in the industry. A company can put "100% pure" on the label but only 5% of what's in that bottle is required by law to be pure. So whatever else comprises that 95%, unless you KNOW your company, you really don't know what you're getting. Here's a great test. Look at your "100% pure" bottle of lavender or peppermint essential oil. Does it have a warning label on it, saying "For external use only" or "Not for internal use"? If so, you have to ask yourself WHY. We can go to our gardens and ingest lavender or peppermint straight from our gardens. Why then can't we ingest a 100% pure lavender or peppermint essential oil? It's because that company KNOWS that something they did along the way has made it TOXIC for human consumption, and therefore you would do well to heed that label. Scientific studies have proven that we can receive tremendous benefits just by SMELLING an essential oil and that an essential oil is found in our BLOODSTREAMS within SECONDS of SMELLING it. So when an essential oil says "Do not take internally," that means do not put it on your skin, do not breathe it in, and by all means do not put it in your water like we in Young Living can and do. So how exactly we're supposed to use those other brands of oil, I'm not quite sure, but know they put that warning label on it for a reason.

Young Living oils are planted, harvested, and distilled... they are DESIGNED to do that right from the very planting of the seed and the owners/founders of Young Living and their patients (and now millions of our members) have been doing so quite safely for more than 30 years, many of us taking essential oils internally in essential oil-infused vitamins and supplements multiple times a day. They are MANY contraindications (i.e. WARNINGS) that go along with most other brands out there, especially with specific oils. But those warnings do not apply to Young Living oils because they were designed with a specific purpose directly from the beginning and processed properly throughout.

We have been using Young Living essential oils every day for the past 11 years, during my pregnancies, labor, deliveries, on our newborns, on our pets... With living a chemical-free lifestyle with our 8 young children, we haven't had to see a doctor for sickness in almost 11 years. My quick reaction to essential oils when I've needed them has been proven over and over! Our bodies truly are smart.

This is an excellent article, by well known expert in the essential oil industry. It's about the purity of lavender oil. A lot of companies sell diluted oil claiming they're 100% pure. They are able to do this, because it's legal to claim an oil is 100% pure, even if it is only 10% of the claimed content.
Young Living oils are absolutely, hands down, 100% pure oil, because of their very strict standards and seed to seal policy. Sometimes Young Living even rejects oils from their own fields after testing, if the oils aren't up to their very strict standards! Guess where those substandard oils end up.....other companies with lower standards.
