Feeling unsure about applying? Keep it simple.

Prior ALPS Traveling Fellow Dr. Michael Siah put it plainly:

โ€œThe process was incredibly easy โ€” I completed my essay and asked mentors for letters of recommendation.โ€

If the application feels big, break it into small steps:
โ€ข Draft your 500 words (objectives + career goals)
โ€ข List two centers and why theyโ€™re complementary
โ€ข Request letters (include deadline + bullet points they can use)

โ€œDiabetes is a profoundly global disease, and limb preservation has to be a global team sport. What struck me in every city was the appetite โ€” surgeons, endocrinologists, and nurses asking the same hard questions about offloading, perfusion, and how to keep people in remission rather than simply closing a wound. The science is portable. The team approach travels. That is the whole point.โ€

ALPS Founding President, David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, Distinguished Professor at the Keck School of Medicine of USC has completed a 13-day academic tour of China spanning five cities and three major diabetes congresses.

Across the tour, Prof. Armstrong delivered invited keynotes on team-based amputation prevention, standardized risk classification, and advancing wound healing at the biological level.

Why the ALPS Traveling Fellowship?

Because no clinician is an island โ€” and one of the fastest ways to grow is to visit other teams, learn whatโ€™s transferable, and build relationships that last.

This fellowship creates protected time to think bigger, compare pathways, and learn from experts tackling the same challenges across disciplines.

What past fellows say about the experience:

"Dr. Venita Chandra didnโ€™t change the lives of these patients. She gave them their lives back, took their pain away, and saved their leg. I wanted to do that for other people," shares Anahita Dua, ALPS Traveling Fellow 2021. https://limbpreservationsociety.org/news/harvard-vascular-surgeon-becomes-first-recipient-of-alps-traveling-fellowship/

"Working with Roberto (Ferraresi, red.) taught me philosophically, technically, and practically, and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity and experience," shares Michael Siah, ALPS Traveling Fellow 2023. https://limbpreservationsociety.org/news/michael-siah-saving-limbs/

โ€œI would, 100%, wake up and do it all over again, shares Dr. Meghan Brennan, ALPS Traveling Fellow 2024.

Who should apply?

If interdisciplinary limb preservation is part of your work โ€” you.

โ€œHonestly, anyone involved in limb preservation. The fellowship is flexible by design.โ€ Dr. Katharine McGinigle, ALPS Traveling Fellow (2022)

Whether youโ€™re early in your career and want to shadow clinical masters, or youโ€™re more senior and want to focus on systems improvement or research partnerships, the ALPS Traveling Fellowship can be tailored to your goals.

Because ALPS brings together diverse disciplines โ€” vascular, podiatry, wound care, infectious disease, and more โ€” everyone has something to learn and contribute.
