The AI You Approved Is Not the AI That's Running 05/17/2026

Something happened this week that most people got wrong.

A hotel check-in system left one million passports and driver's licenses exposed online. The headlines called it a cybersecurity breach.

It wasn't a breach. Nobody hacked anything.

It was a system nobody had mapped, running in a way nobody was watching, holding data nobody had formally accounted for. The exposure wasn't created by an attacker. It accumulated over time, quietly, until someone noticed.

That distinction matters. Because the same pattern is showing up inside organizations running AI right now.

The AI strategy your institution approved isn't necessarily the AI operating inside it today. Systems expand. Tools get adopted informally. Vendor integrations grow beyond their original scope. The governance framework captures a moment. The operating environment keeps moving.

The map went stale. The system didn't.

I wrote about what this means for institutions, and the six questions every leader should be asking right now, in my latest Signal Hacker essay. Free to read.

The AI You Approved Is Not the AI That's Running The map got stale. The system didn't.

Spoke at the U.S. Capitol today alongside Congresswoman Alma Adams, Ph.D. (D-NC-12), Congressman French Hill (R-AR-02) and HBCU leaders from across the country for the reintroduction of the bipartisan IGNITE HBCU Excellence Act.

The message from Morgan State: we didn't wait. We built.

Talent exists everywhere. Infrastructure and opportunity must follow. 🏛️

When the leaders of America's most important institutions take a break from building the future to hit the track in Las Vegas. 🏎️

Dream Racing with my fellow HBCU colleagues and strategic partners, what I like to call our distinguished circle of collaborators and friendly rivals, hosted by our partners at Google.

We compete in the conference room. We compete on the track. And apparently, I compete rather well at both. McLaren Artura. Top 3 fastest lap times. The Morgan State way. 😏🏁

Special shout-out to Anwar Miller for making this happen. Your commitment to this community shows in everything you do. Huge thanks to my instructor from who coached me through every turn. World-class guidance makes a difference, on the track and off. And shout-out to Anthonie at for taking care of our entire group. First class from start to finish.

Thank you Google for bringing us together. Moments like these remind you that the strongest partnerships are built on shared ambition and a little bit of speed.

Honored to attend the State of the State address as a personal guest of Governor Wes Moore and Lt. Governor Aruna Miller.

Their vision for ensuring workers are supported in the age of AI, strengthening public services, and driving economic growth reflects serious leadership for a serious moment.

At Morgan State University, we are committed to partnering in that vision, building the talent, research, and infrastructure that will help Maryland lead responsibly and competitively.

It was also a pleasure to connect with Mayor Brandon Scott and to continue strengthening the collaboration between Morgan and the City of Baltimore. We look forward to working even more deeply with the Mayor’s Office to enhance and modernize the digital infrastructure of our city in ways that expand access and opportunity.

Together, state leadership, city leadership, and higher education can ensure that innovation expands opportunity, creating a prosperous and bright future for all Marylanders and strengthening our nation starting right here at home.

And a special shout out to MHEC Secretary Sanjay Rai who has been an amazing champion and catalyst of the work.

An honor to be introduced by Secretary Sanjay Rai of the Maryland Higher Education Commission to Maryland Lt. Governor Aruna Miller.
Grateful for the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversation around innovation, education, Morgan State University as an innovation hub, and the future of Maryland’s workforce.

Leadership, connection, and vision—this is how we build the future.

The World CIO 200 Summit was full of insights and connections, but there were also
unforgettable moments outside the sessions. Sharing dinner by the pyramids in Cairo was one
of those rare experiences that leaves a lasting impression.

Never underestimate the power of the bear.

Morgan State University is not just part of Baltimore’s future. We are defining it.

As our city and nation navigate the tectonic shifts of the AI era, Morgan is preparing students not merely to participate but to lead with the confidence of sovereignty and the clarity of purpose.

At Morgan, we’re building more than graduates.
We’re cultivating architects of a just, AI-powered future.

This is what institutional excellence looks like.
This is what The Bear leads.

Stillness isn’t stagnation—it’s strategy.

After a long pause from posting, I gifted myself something rare: stillness.
I took a solo trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia. No agenda. No noise. Just me, the trees, and the horizon.

The experience? Rejuvenating. Grounding. Intentional.
There’s clarity in the quiet—clarity I’m bringing with me into what’s next.

Let this be your reminder:
You don’t have to disappear to reset. You just need space.

Grateful. Centered. Recharged.
I’m back.

What’s been keeping you grounded lately?

In every season, under every sky, you were the constant, reliable star guiding me. Life, with its bitter winds and unpredictable seas, could sway but never break me, for you whispered courage in my darkest hours. From miles away or just beside, your spirit always lifted me, a beacon unwavering. You taught me to rise strong—not with grand gestures, but through fierce strength, determination, and unbreakable resilience; not once, but every day. I simply wouldn’t be who I am without you, Mom. For this, and for every unspoken sacrifice, my gratitude knows no bounds. To say I love you is too little. Happy Mother’s Day! 💐

Yesterday, beneath the vast Carolina sky 🌌, I witnessed the christening of Penelope, a vessel as steadfast as our collective hope 🚤.

In Edenton, where history whispers through the oak and brick, we launched more than a ferry; we launched a dream long-held 🌟.

For three decades, Bunny Sanders, former mayor of Roper, has been the architect of ambition 💡. Her vision, Harbor Towns, now threads the Albemarle Sound with swift ferries like Penelope and her sister ship Moses Grandy, promising passage among Elizabeth City, Hertford, Edenton, Plymouth, Columbia, and Manteo 🗺️. This fleet, anchored in Edenton, heralds a new era for our beloved region—a beacon of progress in waters once stirred by the industries of to***co and textiles 🌱🏭.

Thanks to champions like State Rep. Ed Goodwin and countless undaunted hearts ❤️, these boats are more than mere transport; they are carriers of potential, bringing vitality to our shores and knitting the communities of our upbringing closer than ever 🔄.

Returning here, to the waters that once cradled my youth, I felt the pulse of possibility that beats in the heart of every long voyage 🛥️.

Here's to Bunny, to Edenton, and to every soul who believes in the quiet power of persistence 👏.

Special shout out to my mother, Dr. Gloria D. Frelix for being such an amazing connector, mentor, and guide. ❤️

Amidst the heartfelt farewells to our beloved professors, I was graced with the fortune of reconnecting with an old comrade, Carl Seward.

Time has only reinforced the vigor with which he approaches life—a true testament to the indomitable spirit we cultivated at ECSU. 🎓

Carl, ever the dynamo, once steered our Student Government with a blend of zeal and wisdom. His leadership was a beacon then, as it continues to shine brightly today.

Proud to have shared those transformative years, and the pain that was getting through Data Structures, with you, and prouder still to call myself a Viking alongside such a steadfast soul. ⚔️

To shared pasts and promising futures, here's to never losing the fire that once united us on campus. Keep charging forward, my friend.
