Jennifer Conlin For State Representative
48th District State Representative
As we celebrate Juneteenth, it's important to reflect on the history behind this day and why it continues to matter.
In this clip from a conversation I had in 2022 with Dr. Aaron Dworkin, MacArthur Fellow, poet, founder of the Sphinx Organization, former Dean of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and appointee to the National Council on the Arts, he shares the significance of Juneteenth and what it represents in our nation's history.
Juneteenth commemorates the day enslaved people in Texas learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. It is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality. While rooted in the African American experience, its message resonates with all Americans: freedom is worth protecting, expanding, and celebrating.
I hope you'll take a moment to listen and reflect as we honor this important day.

On Tuesday, I introduced House Bill 6101, which would cap the copay on a 30-day supply of insulin to $35 in Michigan.
Too many Michigan families are forced to choose between paying for insulin and paying for other necessities. For people living with diabetes, skipping or rationing insulin can have devastating consequences. No one should have to ration life-saving medication because of its cost, and this bill would help ensure that people can afford the care and meds they need. By capping copays, we can help ensure that Michiganders have the ability to manage their health without worrying that a trip to the pharmacy will break the bank.

After many years of paying into the system, I believe Michigan seniors deserve to keep more of their hard-earned retirement income.
That's why I supported repealing Michigan's retirement tax in 2023, which restores millions of dollars to retirees across our state and puts money back where it belongs in the pockets of Michigan seniors. At a time of rising costs, this tax relief has helped retirees keep more of what they earned through decades of hard work.
Supporting our seniors means delivering policies that provide financial security, which is a priority I will not compromise on.

Endorsement Alert!
I'm honored to receive the endorsement of the Michigan Nurses Association, especially in a district that is home to so many nurses, health care professionals, and families connected to Michigan's leading hospitals
I strongly believe nurses are on the front lines of our health care system every day, providing care and advocating for patients in some of the hardest moments of their lives. They deserve safe working conditions, fair compensation, strong retirement benefits, and staffing levels that allow them to provide quality care for every patient. I am proud to stand with members of the Michigan Nurses Association as they continue fighting for fair contracts and the resources needed to deliver safe, high-quality care.
Thank you to the Michigan Nurses Association for your support and for the critical work you do every day on behalf of patients and communities across our state. You are invaluable to our community.

As door-knocking and canvassing have really started to pick up this campaign season, District 48 has made it clear: Voters are tired of partisan back-and-forth. I am too, and to me, community matters more than any party. Here's what can happen with a representative who focuses on their district instead of political noise:

Every child deserves the security and legal protections that come with having their family recognized under the law.
That's why I sponsored House Bill 5211 as part of Michigan's Family Protection Act to help ensure children born through assisted reproduction or surrogacy have clear legal protections and parent-child relationships are recognized and protected.
Families come in many forms, and Michigan law should reflect that reality. I'm proud to support policies that provide certainty, stability, and protection for parents and children across our state.

Yesterday was an incredible evening to celebrate the start of summer and the beginning of another campaign season!
My annual Garden Party is one of my favorite traditions because it brings together people from every corner of this district who care deeply about our community and Michigan’s future. Across our district, which is one of the most competitive in the state, I’m constantly reminded that while we all come from different backgrounds and perspectives, we also all share the desire for safe communities, strong schools, opportunity for our families, and a government that works for people.
I’m especially grateful to Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, House Democratic Leader Ranjeev Puri, and former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink for joining us and sharing your insight and leadership.
Most of all, thank you to everyone who attended, supported, and continues to believe in this campaign. I’m excited for the conversations, hard work, and community that the months ahead will bring.
