ome. Only then did I learn that white paper actually inhibited her ability to read efficiently. It was extremely uncomfortable for her to read black letters on white paper, especially in bright, fluorescent lighting. My child was 20 years old and was finally able to show me, after learning of Irlen, that the letters moved on the page, even separating and pairing up with other words to distort what she actually saw. I bet you can, especially if you are reading my story. Had I known this when she was younger, there would have been years of anguish erased. Years of feelings of failure and defeat, gone. Additionally, many teachers are unaware of Irlen, the science behind the syndrome or what can be done about it. Children and many adults do not realize that light is playing a tremendous role in how they process print. According to the science, and Helen Irlen, 'It's not a vision thing, it is a brain thing." The message is distorted for as many as 46% of struggling readers due to how the brain is processing wavelengths of light. Children often think they are seeing what everyone else sees and cannot articulate what issues they are really having. Become aware and have your student screened. Irlen spectral filters and overlays can make reading or working with math and graph paper more comfortable and therefore, easier to learn and master. Who We Help:
