The Angier ABC Store Celebrates America's 250th

On this day in 1776, a dramatic June 24th saw the American Revolution tear into the nation's most famous family.

The Continental Congress ordered the arrest of New Jersey's Royal Governor—Benjamin Franklin's Loyalist son, William. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania voted to declare its independence, and George Washington geared up for war.🔥

The Ultimate Family Feud & the Countdown to 1776!Can you imagine voting to arrest your own son? That is exactly what Benjamin Franklin did when the Second Continental Congress resolved to imprison his estranged, Loyalist son, William!

Here is what went down on this chaotic day in American history:

The Franklin Fracture:

William Franklin (New Jersey's Royal Governor) refused to abandon the Crown. Congress sent the steadfast Loyalist to prison in Connecticut, severing ties with his Patriot father.

PA Breaks Free:

A full ten days before the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted, delegates at the Pennsylvania Provincial Conference inside Philadelphia’s Carpenters' Hall officially declared the colony's independence from Great Britain.

Battle Prep:

General George Washington and the Continental Army hit high gear, mobilizing troops and bracing for the imminent arrival of a massive British fleet in New York.

Drop a comment to let me know whose side you would have been on: Team Patriot or Team Loyalist? 👇

Angier ABC Celebrates America's 250th !!

On June 23, 1776, a massive British fleet of over 300 ships carrying 32,000 troops and Hessian mercenaries arrived in New York Harbor.

Concurrently in Philadelphia, Founding Father and physician Dr. Benjamin Rush finalized Pennsylvania's own Declaration of Independence, paving the way for the national vote.

A breakdown of the broader historical context during that explosive week in the summer of 1776.

British Invasion of New York: The arrival of the largest expeditionary force in British history transformed the conflict into a full-scale international war, forcing General George Washington and his ~19,000 militiamen to prepare for a grueling defense of Manhattan.

Drafting in Philadelphia: With the Continental Congress actively debating separation from Great Britain, Benjamin Rush completed the text for Pennsylvania's declaration, while Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin were simultaneously working on the draft for the United States Declaration of Independence.

Southern Preparations: Further south, colonial militias in South Carolina were actively fortifying positions, setting the stage for a critical Patriot victory against the British Royal Navy at the Battle of Sullivan’s Island just a few days later.

The Angier ABC Store celebrates America's 250th

Celebrating North Carolina Heros...

🇺🇸 America 250: Meet the Man Who Built America's Navy Before America Existed! 🇺🇸

When you think of Revolutionary War heroes, names like Washington and Adams probably come to mind. But have you heard of Joseph Hewes?

A successful merchant from Edenton, North Carolina, Hewes wasn't just a signer of the Declaration of Independence—he was the driving force behind creating America's very first navy.

⚓ One of only three North Carolinians to sign the Declaration of Independence.

⚓ A supporter of the Halifax Resolves, making North Carolina the first colony to officially call for independence.

⚓ Chairman of the Naval Committee and the man who helped launch the Continental Navy.

⚓ A champion of a young naval officer named John Paul Jones, who would become one of America's greatest naval heroes.

Hewes gave everything he had to the cause of liberty, working himself to exhaustion in service to the new nation. Though he died at just 49 years old, his legacy sailed on through every American ship that followed.

And what you ask, was the first ship commissioned for Continental service? The Alfred, purchased by the Continental Congress on November 4, 1775, she was outfitted as a 24-gun frigate and officially commissioned into service on December 3, 1775, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Today, we honor Joseph Hewes—North Carolina patriot, Founding Father, and the man who helped put America on the seas.

🇺🇸 Freedom wasn't just won on the battlefield—it was built by leaders like Joseph Hewes. 🇺🇸

Angier ABC Celebrates America's 250th !

Before America won its independence, the Revolutionary War was a chaotic, globe-spanning conflict filled with spies, pirates, secret codes, and even the world's first submarine attack.

🇺🇸 Surprising Revolutionary War Facts:

🔹 The word "independence" never actually appears in the Declaration of Independence.

🍉 The massive Battle of Long Island—featuring more than 30,000 troops—reportedly began after Patriot soldiers spotted British troops stealing watermelons.

🚢 In 1776, Americans launched the world's first submarine attack using the Turtle, a 7.5-foot, acorn-shaped submersible designed to attach explosives to a British warship.

🕵️ George Washington's intelligence network relied on invisible ink, coded messages, and the highly effective Culper Spy Ring to gather critical information.

🏴‍☠️ The Continental Congress authorized privateers—essentially legal pirates—to raid British shipping, capturing goods worth hundreds of millions of dollars in today's value.

⚔️ After the Siege of Yorktown, British General Cornwallis claimed illness and skipped the surrender ceremony, forcing his second-in-command to surrender instead.

💉 Smallpox killed more soldiers than battlefield combat. To combat the threat, Washington secretly ordered one of the first large-scale military inoculation programs in history.

The Revolutionary War wasn't just muskets and battlefields—it was espionage, innovation, disease, and unconventional warfare on a scale most people never learn about.
